James Van Der Beek’s final post has devastated fans following the announcement of his death at age 48.

The American actor was widely recognized for playing Dawson Leery on Dawson’s Creek and for portraying a humorous, exaggerated version of himself on the ABC cult comedy Don’t Trust the B**** in Apartment 23.

His movie roles included Varsity Blues, The Rules of Attraction, and Labor Day.

Shortly after reports of his death emerged, Van Der Beek’s wife, Kimberly, confirmed the news in a public statement.

In an emotional post shared on Instagram, she wrote: “Our cherished James David Van Der Beek passed away peacefully earlier today. He faced his final days with bravery, deep faith, and dignity. There is so much to say about his wishes, his compassion for others, and how deeply he valued time — and we will share more in time.

“For now, we kindly ask for privacy as we mourn our devoted husband, father, son, brother, and friend.”

Following the devastating news, fans have taken to social media to pay tribute.

One wrote: “An incredible father, husband, artist, and so much more. Sending your family all the love and comfort.”

As another added: “So sad to see this news. He was a bright light here on Instagram and in the world. I will be praying for your family as you mourn this immense loss.”

A third commented: “Omg I am so incredibly sorry for you and your family. He always led with kindness and love. His light will carry on.”

Van Der Beek has passed away following a two-year battle with colorectal cancer, also known as bowel cancer.

The star was diagnosed with stage three colorectal cancer in August 2023 and spoke openly about his illness in the years leading up to his passing.

Coming to terms with cancer diagnosis

When the actor shared his diagnosis with People magazine in 2024, he explained that he had been handling the illness privately for some time.

Van Der Beek revealed: “I have colorectal cancer. I’ve been quietly coping with this diagnosis and taking action to address it, supported by my incredible family.”

During his journey, he kept fans informed, acknowledging that living with cancer felt like a ‘full-time job’ and calling it an ongoing ‘process.’

He also reflected on the moment he learned of his diagnosis and his initial reaction.

“I believed I was doing everything right,” he shared. “I ate as healthily as possible. I was fit. My cardiovascular health was excellent. In my mind, there was no reason I should have received a positive diagnosis.”

As Van Der Beek continued navigating his diagnosis, he later shared a deeply personal perspective in his final TV appearance.

Final televised interview

Two months before his death, Van Der Beek gave what would become his final televised interview, speaking from his home on Today.

During the emotional appearance, he surprised many viewers by describing his illness as the ‘best thing’ that had ever happened to him.

“One of the things I was really lucky about was when I heard the news, I was like, ‘This is gonna be the best thing that’s ever happened to me,’” he said.

He explained that an inner voice told him the diagnosis would push him to make meaningful changes he might never have made otherwise – changes that could ultimately bring more health and happiness to his years ahead.

Van Der Beek also spoke about how the illness had impacted his family life, sharing that he and his wife, Kimberly, had been honest with their six children about what he was going through.

“Kids know if you’re not right. They know if you’re sick. They know you’re not feeling well. They know if you’re in pain,” he said. “So their request to me, especially the older ones, is, ‘Just be honest with us. We want to know.’”

He admitted that while he naturally wanted to protect his children from seeing him struggle and hoped to remain a strong, heroic figure in their eyes, he came to understand that showing resilience – and allowing them to witness it – was ultimately a valuable lesson for them.

Not long after his televised appearance, the actor shared one last message with fans on Instagram.

Haunting final post

Van Der Beek shared his final Instagram post on January 26. It was a slideshow of two images: one of the actor with his daughter, and the second of his daughter with his father.

The post was captioned: “My father and my daughter share a birthday today. At first, I thought that was all they shared – they seemed so different to me.

“But as the two of you have evolved, and let more of who you are shine through, I can recognize the same open, warm, loving, gentle heart. I see the care and dedication you shower upon those you love most. I see the same out-of-the-box Aquarian creativity and originality. And you both make every room you’re in more fun. Different senes of humor, but you both have a way of alchemizing the vibe around you in such a subtle way one can almost miss how powerfully you do this.

“In this crazy world, it’s a wonder to me that you’ve managed to stay so open, so tender, and so genuinely good.

“You are marvels… and I’m so insanely grateful to have you in my life.

“The world is a better place because the two of you are in it.

“Happy birthday, guys. I love you with all my heart,” alongside a love heart emoji.

What is bowel cancer?

Bowel cancer is a type of cancer that forms in the large bowel, which includes the colon and rectum.

The large bowel plays an important role in digestion. It absorbs water from food and helps remove waste from the body.

According to the World Health Organization, it’s the third most common cancer type worldwide.

How the condition can be detected

The Dawson’s Creek actor was diagnosed with bowel cancer in the latter part of 2023, but only spoke publicly about it in November 2024.

Speaking to Business Insider, he said the first signs were changes in his bowel habits – one of the most common warning signs.

He initially tried making small changes, including cutting out coffee, but when symptoms didn’t improve, he went for a screening test.

The test revealed he had stage three bowel cancer, meaning it had spread to nearby lymph nodes.

Medical experts say bowel cancer, also called colorectal cancer, often begins as small growths on the lining of the colon and can spread if not treated.

The Cleveland Clinic notes that men are diagnosed more often than women, but screening programmes have helped spot cases earlier, reducing death rates.

Signs and symptoms to look out for

Symptoms of bowel cancer can vary from person to person, but may include:

  • Ongoing changes in bowel habits, including diarrhoea or constipation
  • Going to the toilet more or less often than normal for you
  • Blood in your poo, which may appear bright red or very dark
  • Bleeding from the bottom
  • A feeling of needing to go even after you’ve already been
  • Stomach pain or discomfort
  • A noticeable lump in the tummy
  • Bloating
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Feeling unusually tired or short of breath, which can be linked to anaemia

What to do if you’re worried

Many of these symptoms are common and can be caused by less serious conditions.

Experiencing symptoms does not automatically mean you have cancer. However, health experts say it’s important to get checked if symptoms persist.

If symptoms last for three weeks or more, people are advised to speak to a family doctor.

Early detection can make bowel cancer easier to treat. Healthcare professionals deal with these concerns every day, so there’s no need to feel embarrassed about asking for advice.
