Keith Urban Fans Creeped Out As Singer Changes Nicole Kidman Lyric For 25-Year-Old Bandmate
Keith Urban is facing a backlash after changing the lyrics of a song he wrote about Nicole Kidman to reference his 25-year-old bandmate, just days before news of the couple’s separation.
News broke this week that Kidman, 58, filed for divorce from Urban, 57, on September 30, citing ‘irreconcilable differences’ after the pair split at the start of summer, ending their 19-year marriage.
The couple shares two daughters: Sunday Rose, 17, and Faith Margaret, 14.
Documents obtained by media outlets revealed a custody arrangement with Kidman having the teenagers for 306 days of the year, and Urban just 59 days.
According to The Sun, Urban was the one who initiated the split and wanted to separate from the Oscar-winner, despite Kidman’s attempts to save the marriage.
“Nicole didn’t want this. She has been fighting to save the marriage,” a source told People magazine, adding that Kidman’s family has rallied around her during this difficult time.
Multiple sources told TMZ that ‘all the signs point to the fact Keith is with another woman,’ with one adding that Kidman ‘doesn’t dispute that, but she’s still shocked over it.’
Another source claimed the rumor circulating in Nashville is that Urban is involved with ‘a younger woman in the business.’
“The rumor is that he’s with a younger woman in the business. It’s all everyone is talking about. Everyone wants to know who, but so far, that’s a mystery,” a Nashville music business source told the Mirror.
And now, a lyric change and timing has fueled online speculation.
The timing of the performance, coming just before the couple’s separation was announced, has left supporters of Kidman fuming.
Social media users described the gesture as ‘disgusting’ and questioned Urban’s character given the personal nature of the song.
“Wow, that song was made for Nicole. For him to do that tells us what he’s really all about,” one user commented on the video.
Another wrote: “It is so trashy to do this to a song inspired by his wife. It’s the ultimate ick.”
Others called it ‘utter disrespect,’ with a third adding: “Nic deserves so so much better than this.”
Several fans noted that while breakups happen, they should be handled ‘with grace, dignity, and respect.’
During a recent performance on his High and Alive World Tour, Urban altered his 2016 hit ‘The Fighter’ to give a shout-out to guitarist Maggie Baugh, 25.
The clip, shared by Baugh on Instagram on September 27, shows Urban changing the line from: “When they’re tryna get to you, baby I’ll be the fighter” to: “When they’re tryna get to you, Maggie, I’ll be your guitar player.”
Baugh captioned the post with stunned emojis and wrote: “Did he just say that,” seemingly surprised by the on-stage tribute.
The lyric change has particularly upset fans given the song’s deeply personal origins.
Urban has been open about ‘The Fighter’ being inspired by his relationship with Kidman, making his decision to repurpose it for another woman all the more jarring for supporters of the Australian actress.
In a 2017 interview with Billboard, Urban explained the song emerged from conversations he had with Kidman early in their relationship.
“It’s all from a conversation my wife and I had early on in our relationship, that when things get tough, I need to hold her tighter and just try to take care of her,” he said at the time.
“The song is about wanting to heal somebody, wanting to take care of somebody, wanting to protect somebody. It’s really like a vow in so many ways.”
Urban wrote the song when he temporarily moved to London to support Kidman while she was performing on the West End.
The couple even sang it together in their car in 2016, with Kidman becoming emotional upon first hearing it. “I remember when he first played it for me, and I started to cry,” she said in 2017.
Baugh has reportedly faced abuse on her Instagram page from fans jumping to conclusions, despite the lack of any confirmation of a romantic relationship.
Urban has continued performing on his tour as the news unfolded, while sources indicate Kidman has been ‘holding the family together through this difficult time since Keith has been gone.’
The actress is said to be devastated by the marriage ending, with one source describing her as feeling ‘betrayed.’
