Lisa Kudrow claims her mom ‘woke everybody up’ to deliver them an eerie message from beyond the grave.

Kudrow is one of the most beloved figures in television history.

Her portrayal of the eccentric, warm-hearted Phoebe Buffay on Friends made her a household name across the world and earned her an Emmy Award, but it is a real-life story, far more personal and far more moving than anything in a sitcom script, that has been capturing hearts.

In a candid interview on Mayim Bialik’s Breakdown podcast, the actress opened up about the death of her mother, Nedra Stern, in 2020, and the series of eerie coincidences that followed, leaving Kudrow with a conclusion that she is entirely at peace with.

Life imitating art

For fans of Friends, there is an almost poetic dimension to Kudrow’s story. Her character Phoebe Buffay was famously spiritual, intuitive, and open to the idea that love does not simply end when someone dies.

One of the show’s most beloved recurring storylines involved Phoebe believing that a stray cat was carrying the spirit of her late mother, a plot that many viewers initially laughed at but came to find genuinely moving.

Kudrow was careful to frame her own experience as exactly that: a personal experience, not a claim of supernatural proof.

She was not telling the world that she had confirmed what happens after death. She was sharing something that happened to her family, and the conclusion she drew from it, which brought her comfort.

A family woken in the night

Kudrow’s mother Nedra Stern passed away in 2020, and in the immediate aftermath, a pattern emerged among the family members spread across different homes that Kudrow found impossible to dismiss as coincidence.

Multiple people who loved Nedra all happened to be awake at the moment the news came through, despite it being the middle of the night.

“My brother was up when he got the call,” Kudrow recalled on the podcast. “It was like 2:30, almost 3 in the morning. My father was up when he got the call. My husband was up.”

Her sister’s experience was slightly different but equally strange. The bedroom alarm in her sister’s home went off unexpectedly during the night, waking both her and her brother-in-law.

And yet, Kudrow noted, her sister remained unusually calm, not the panicked, disoriented reaction you might expect from being jolted awake in the small hours.

When the family came together and began comparing notes, the pattern became clear. Almost everyone had been awake. And as Kudrow reflected on what had happened, she arrived at an explanation that felt entirely right to her.

“She flew around and woke everybody up when she passed,” she said. “I don’t think that’s weird at all.”

She paused before adding, with the kind of gentle humour that made Phoebe Buffay so endearing: “Except she didn’t wake me up.”

The text from ‘the beyond’

But the story didn’t end there. A second incident occurred in the days following her mother’s death, while Kudrow was doing something both ordinary and deeply painful, putting together a photo slideshow for her mother’s funeral.

She was sitting quietly, looking through old photographs and occasionally responding to messages on her phone, when she noticed something strange.

The word ‘M-O-M’ kept appearing in the message box, as if she had been typing it. She had no memory of doing so.

“And then I get another text, and I open it up, and it’s as if I’ve already responded,” she said. “There’s some writing in the message box. I didn’t write that.”

Each time it happened, she deleted the text and assumed it was a glitch. Her phone playing up. Nothing more.

A few days later, she mentioned the strange phone behaviour to her husband Michel Stern and a friend. She framed it as a technology problem, something to be explained rationally. Her friend immediately offered a very different interpretation.

“Lisa, your mom texted you,” the friend said.

Kudrow laughed as she recalled her own response. The message, she told her friend, had come “from the beyond.”

Kudrow’s mother woke up her family one last time, if you choose to believe it. She tried to text her daughter, if you choose to believe that too.

And the only one she didn’t manage to reach that night was the woman she had raised: the comedian who turned grief into warmth for millions of viewers, and who is now doing exactly the same thing in real life.
