LL Cool J has admitted he ‘had no idea’ he was responsible for creating one of the most widely used phrases in modern culture.

Some of the biggest additions to everyday language aren’t carefully planned. Instead, they emerge from an offhand comment, a movie quote, or a lyric that unexpectedly captures people’s imagination.

Before long, the words begin appearing everywhere, in text messages, social media posts, and everyday conversations, often with little awareness of where they originally came from.

That’s the nature of pop culture.

A seemingly ordinary line can quietly spread from one person to the next until it becomes part of everyday vocabulary, while the person who first said it has no idea how far it has traveled.

That’s exactly what happened to LL Cool J, born James Todd Smith, who revealed he never imagined one of his lyrics would evolve into a phrase recognized around the world.

What began as a title for one of his albums eventually became part of the global lexicon, showing how an unexpected creative moment can leave a lasting cultural legacy.

A career built on music, movies and television

The New York-born star burst onto the music scene four decades ago when he was just 16 years old, becoming hip-hop’s first major solo superstar.

Alongside a hugely successful recording career, LL has established himself as a respected actor, earning multiple platinum albums, numerous awards, and more than 35 screen credits.

His acting résumé includes roles in Any Given Sunday, S.W.A.T., Charlie’s Angels, In Too Deep, and Deep Blue Sea, as well as his long-running portrayal of Special Agent Sam Hanna on NCIS: Los Angeles.

Away from entertainment, he has also become a successful entrepreneur and philanthropist while raising a family with his wife and their four children.

Even with his success on screen, LL insists music has always remained closest to his heart.

“I just love the music,” he said. “I don’t limit myself. I do enjoy doing these films and television shows, but I just love music more.”

Although he has thought about retiring from recording over the years, he says inspiration continues to pull him back into the studio.

“As long as I’m inspired, I will always want to record and release more music.”

Why LL Cool J returned to recording

The rap icon recently spoke to Metro about releasing his first studio album in more than 11 years.

Following the release of Authentic in 2013, LL stepped away from recording for an extended period before deciding it was time to reconnect with fans. He explained that he never wanted to become what he described as a ‘part-time artist.’

“You can’t be an artist in your spare time,” he told the publication during a Zoom interview from New York, adding that although music had taken a back seat, he never completely stopped creating.

“Musically, the pilot light was always on. I’d always be going in the studio and touching things here and there.”

A major catalyst came when NCIS: Los Angeles aired its final season in May 2023, freeing up more time for him to focus on music again.

The result was The FORCE—short for Frequencies of Real Creative Energy—a 14-track album produced entirely by Q-Tip from A Tribe Called Quest.

The project also marked a return to Def Jam Recordings, the legendary label where LL first made his debut in 1984. He had previously left after releasing his 2008 album Exit 13 amid creative disagreements with label executives.

Now back with Def Jam, LL says he was drawn by a renewed sense of energy at the label, which is also home to artists including Rihanna, Justin Bieber, Big Sean, Coco Jones, and Jhené Aiko.

How one lyric became part of everyday language

While LL Cool J’s musical achievements are undeniable, one of his biggest contributions to popular culture came in a completely unexpected way.

Looking back, the rapper admitted he never anticipated that a simple creative decision would eventually become something recognized across the globe.

Rather than carefully trying to launch a catchphrase, he simply chose words that reflected the message he wanted to convey at the time.

Only years later did he realize just how deeply the expression had embedded itself into everyday conversations, sports, entertainment, and internet culture.

Even now, he says he is amazed by the impact those words have had far beyond the music industry.

The famous phrase that changed pop culture

LL is widely credited with introducing the acronym ‘G.O.A.T.’, meaning Greatest of All Time, which has since become one of the world’s most recognizable ways to describe exceptional athletes, musicians, actors, and other cultural figures.

The idea combined two major inspirations: Muhammad Ali’s legendary declaration, ‘I am the greatest,’ and legendary New York street basketball player Earl ‘The Goat’ Manigault.

He first used the acronym as the title of his 2000 album, G.O.A.T. Featuring James T. Smith: The Greatest of All Time, which went on to reach number one on the Billboard 200 chart.

Reflecting on its lasting influence, LL admitted: “I had no idea it was gonna become a worldwide phrase and statement.”

Although he joked that he wishes he had trademarked the expression, he ultimately views its widespread popularity as an incredible achievement and evidence that creativity can have an impact far beyond its original purpose.

“To be able to touch the world through my art like that is pretty dope. What it says to me is that I can do more creatively. It says to me, if I’m capable of creating terminology for the entire globe, I can do some big things.”
