Macaulay Culkin has opened up about the disturbing reason he left his Hollywood career behind as a child.

The beloved Home Alone actor has reflected on his difficult upbringing, opening up in a way that has both saddened fans and highlighted the remarkable resilience he has shown throughout his life.

Now 45, Culkin appeared in Colin Hanks’ documentary, John Candy: I Like Me, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last year.

The documentary celebrates the life and legacy of comedy icon John Candy, who died in 1994 at the age of 43 following a heart attack.

While the film is filled with fond memories of Candy, it was Culkin’s emotional reflections that have resonated most strongly with viewers.

The documentary includes heartfelt stories from a number of stars who worked alongside Candy, including Dan Aykroyd, Tom Hanks, Martin Short, Steve Martin, Catherine O’Hara, and Andrea Martin.

Yet among the many tributes, Culkin’s account stood out, drawing significant attention from audiences around the world.

Fans quickly took to social media to express both sadness over his experiences and admiration for how he has rebuilt his life.

“That’s so sad,” one wrote, while another added: “Macauley Culkin deserves everything good in life.”

Another penned: “He’s definitely a comeback kid! Happy to see another celebrity escaping the negative curse of being a child star and making the best out of life.”

“Just awful for the Culkin boys. So happy to see they’ve come through it,” agreed another.

A fan added: “I am SO FREAKING PROUD of Mac and Kieran! They have found themselves despite the odds and traumas. They are healthy, thriving, fathers who have turned into great men! Congratulations boys you made it anyways!”

“I am so glad that Macaulay and Kieran are both thriving as adults. They deserve all of the success and happiness that they have worked so hard for their entire lives,” someone else concluded.

Macaulay Culkin recalls John Candy’s kindness

Back in 1989, Culkin starred opposite Candy in the John Hughes comedy Uncle Buck.

At the time, the young actor was only beginning his journey to international fame. What many fans didn’t realize was the difficult environment he was dealing with away from the cameras, and how one compassionate adult recognized what was happening.

According to Culkin, Candy seemed to have a protective, fatherly presence during filming. He offered a level of care and concern that was largely absent elsewhere in the actor’s childhood.

The late comedian regularly checked in on Culkin, quietly making sure he was okay and showing genuine interest in his wellbeing.

Actor opens up about difficult relationship with father

During the documentary, Culkin spoke candidly about his relationship with his father, Christopher ‘Kit’ Culkin.

One of the most striking revelations involved Candy recognizing early on that something wasn’t right.

“Listen, even before the wave crested and the Home Alone stuff was happening, it was not hard to see how difficult my father was,” Culkin revealed, per People. “It was no secret. He was already a monster.”

Culkin explained that the situation only intensified once fame and financial success entered the picture.

“All of a sudden, the fame and the money came, and he became an infamous monster. He was already not a good guy.”

The actor also recalled how Candy would discreetly check on him, offering support through simple but meaningful conversations.

“I think John was looking a little side-eyed, like, ‘Is everything alright over there? You doing good? Good day? Everything’s alright? Everything good at home? Alright.’”

Perhaps the most emotional moment came when Culkin reflected on how uncommon that level of care was in his life.

“It doesn’t happen that often,” he recalled.

“It actually happened less as time went on. I wish I got more of that in my life. It’s important that I remember that. I remember John caring when not a lot of people did.”

This is not the first time Culkin has addressed his strained relationship with his father.

Both Macaulay and his brother, Kieran Culkin, have previously discussed what they describe as a toxic relationship with Kit Culkin.

The family has reportedly been estranged for more than three decades. In past interviews, Culkin has referred to his father as ‘narcissistic’ and ‘abusive,’ according to Yahoo.

During a recent podcast appearance, the actor shared another reflection on his father’s influence, explaining: “One of my earliest memories of him was thinking when I grew up, this is how I’m not gonna be with my kids.”

He also pointed out that although his father has seven children and four grandchildren, and ‘none of them want anything to do with him.’

The tough decision to leave Hollywood

After the huge success of the Home Alone Franchise, Culkin went on to star in a number of different movies, including My Girl, The Good Son, Getting Even with Dad, and Richie Rich, which meant he spent almost the entirety of his childhood working.

By the mid-1990s, after becoming the biggest child star in the world, he made the decision to step away from acting.

This was in part because of the horrendous abuse he was facing at the hands of his father and also a result of being burnt out by fame and constant work.

“I wanted to go out and I wanted to date girls, and I wanted to hang out with people my own age. I wanted to, you know, go to a party,” he said during an episode of Mythical Kitchen.

“I wanted to do those kind of things. I can’t tell you how many Bar Mitzvahs I missed.”
