Some fans believe they’ve spotted a major detail in the video of Michael Jordan’s ‘inappropriate’ act at the Daytona 500.

It was supposed to be one of the greatest days of the six-time NBA champion’s sporting life, and for most of Sunday, it was.

But by Monday morning, Jordan’s historic Daytona 500 victory had been almost completely overshadowed by a viral video clip that sent the internet into a frenzy.

Now, fans are taking a closer look at that footage, and many believe they’ve spotted the truth.

A historic win

When Tyler Reddick crossed the finish line at the Daytona International Speedway on February 15, he didn’t just win a race, he handed his boss a piece of history.

Reddick, 30, had entered the event on a 38-race losing streak, with his last Cup Series victory coming late in the 2024 season.

But on the day that mattered most, he delivered in breathtaking fashion, leading for just one lap, the final one, to claim the checkered flag and give 23XI Racing its first-ever Daytona 500 triumph.

Jordan, who co-founded the team in 2021 alongside Denny Hamlin, was understandably overcome with emotion.

“I can’t even believe it. It was so gratifying,” he said in his post-race interview, per Yahoo. “You never know how these races are going to end. You just try to survive. We hung in there all day. Great strategy by the team, and we gave ourselves a chance at the end. Look, I’m ecstatic.”

For Jordan, whose love of NASCAR runs deep (he recalled growing up watching the race as a family tradition back home in North Carolina), the moment carried enormous personal weight.

“It was a group event. The family sat there, and we watched the race. Four hours, five hours, six hours, didn’t matter. We were gonna watch the race,” he said. “For me to have an opportunity to continue to come back and be a part of this kinda reminds me of being back home in North Carolina and being able to connect with the family.”

With his 63rd birthday falling on Tuesday, Jordan also made it known he was expecting something sparkly.

“It feels like I won a championship, but until I get my ring, I won’t even know,” he said, and he made sure everyone knew he wears a size 13.

The moment that broke the internet

Amid all the celebration in victory lane, cameras caught something that made viewers do a double-take.

In a clip that quickly went viral, Jordan can be seen reaching toward Reddick’s young son, Beau, appearing to pinch around the child’s lower back, tug at his T-shirt, and rub the back of his leg.

The reaction online was swift and brutal.

“Straight to jail,” one user wrote. “MJ ruined his entire legacy in only 23 seconds,” declared another.

Others posted: “Yo what did I just witness?” and: “After the week we just had… this is NOT a good look.”

The comment sections filled up fast, with many calling the interaction wildly inappropriate and demanding accountability.

A divided internet

Not everyone was ready to condemn the basketball legend, however. While one side of the internet was sounding the alarm, another was urging people to pump the brakes and look more carefully at what was actually happening in the clip.

“Give it a rest! The kid is wet,” one commenter pointed out plainly.

Another offered a more detailed read of the situation: “Everyone got doused in champagne. The boy said he was itchy, and Michael Jordan was helping the poor kid out. He’s pulling the shirt away and then he scratches the boy’s leg. I know that the Epstein files are out and people are on edge, but this ain’t it, folks. Grow up.”

A third added crucial context: “Tyler Reddick is the driver and this is Tyler’s son. Champagne had just been poured on everyone and the son said it was making him itch.”

It’s also worth noting that Jordan shares a well-documented bond with the Reddick family.

Reddick himself revealed in a 2024 interview with The Athletic just how close the relationship between his family and Jordan has grown over the years – meaning this was far from an interaction between strangers.

As co-owner Denny Hamlin put it, Jordan’s emotional investment in his team is total: “He loves his race team. There’s nothing else that can bring him the joy that seeing what his team can do.”

Detail fans are zeroing in on

As the clip continued to circulate and the debate raged on, a key theory began to gain serious traction, one that reframes the entire moment.

NASCAR podcaster Bubba The Love Sponge Clem, speaking with clear conviction, pushed back hard on the outrage and offered what he believes is the definitive explanation.

“Tyler Reddick’s son had a chunk of ice,” Clem stated. “You can see that Tyler Reddick’s son’s shirt is completely saturated, and Michael Jordan tried to help a little kid out; ‘Let me get those chunks of ice out of your back.'”

Look again at the footage with that context in mind, and everything clicks.

What Jordan appeared to be doing, according to those paying close attention, was exactly what any caring adult in that moment might do, pulling the boy’s shirt away from his back and helping dislodge the ice that had gotten trapped against his skin.

The pinching motion around the lower back? Likely Jordan trying to fish out a piece of ice. The leg rub? Soothing a kid who’d just had freezing cold ice sliding down his back.

Neither Jordan nor 23XI Racing has publicly addressed the controversy.
