Miley Cyrus Issues Sad Health Update After Devastating Diagnosis
Miley Cyrus has shared a sad health update after revealing she’s suffering from a rare medical condition.
In a recent interview, the ‘Flowers’ singer opened up about the condition that has shaped one of her most defining traits – her unmistakably raspy voice.
Long gone is the youthful, polished vocal tone from her Hannah Montana days.
Over the years, Cyrus’ voice has developed into something deeper and more textured, a gravelly sound that conveys raw emotion, adding a rebellious energy to her rock-tinged music and a soulful edge to her ballads.
Her raspy tone is instantly recognizable and has become central to her artistic identity.
Fans have often praised its uniqueness, but few knew the medical cause behind it – until now.
In a candid conversation with Zane Lowe on Apple Music on May 21, the singer revealed that she lives with Reinke’s edema, a rare condition that causes fluid to collect in the outer layer of the vocal cords.
“I have the Reinke’s edema, which is something that is called, it’s abuse of the vocal cords,” Cyrus explained.
“And being 21 and staying up and drinking and smoking and partying after every show does not help. But also in my case, it does not cause it. So my voice always sounded like this, it’s a part of my unique anatomy.”
The 32-year-old singer said the condition has had a profound influence on her career.
Beyond shaping her signature sound, it has impacted Cyrus physically, making live performances particularly challenging.
“It’s extremely difficult to perform with,” she said, “because it’s like running a marathon with ankle weights on.”
Cyrus also shared that she has a large polyp on her vocal cords, which contributes significantly to her distinctive vocal texture.
“I’m not willing to sever it ever, because the chance of waking up from a surgery and not sounding like myself is a probability,” she said.
“It’s given me a lot of the tone and the texture that has made me who I am.”
Because of these vocal limitations, the singer doesn’t often commit to lengthy tours.
Even her mother, Tish Cyrus, can tell when her voice is strained.
“Sometimes, at the end of the day, I’ll call my mom, and she’ll go, ‘Oh, you sound like you’re talking through a radio.’ And that’s how you know I’m really tired, because it creates that ultimate vocal fry,” Cyrus said.
Despite the challenges, the musician continues to create and perform on her own terms.
She’s set to release her ninth studio album, ‘Something Beautiful,’ on May 30, alongside a companion film of the same name.
“That’s why I want to create this film, the film is my way of touring,” she said. “That’s why I’m putting it into theaters… You get a feel like you’re a part of a performance.”
