Miriam Margolyes has left fans devastated after issuing a heartbreaking health update.

The beloved British actress has captured hearts worldwide with her memorable performances spanning decades of film and television.

From her iconic portrayal of Professor Sprout in the Harry Potter franchise to her acclaimed roles in Doctor Who and Call the Midwife, the 84-year-old performer has become a cherished figure in entertainment.

Margolyes’ filmography includes standout performances in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2.

Away from the spotlight, Margolyes shares a loving relationship with her long-term partner, Australian professor Heather Sutherland.

The couple has maintained an unconventional arrangement, keeping separate homes in London and Amsterdam while coming together for vacations in Tuscany and New South Wales.

“We really do love each other,” Margolyes shared with the Express, describing Heather as a ‘remarkable and brilliant woman.’

The actress expressed hope that they will be able to spend their remaining years together in the house they purchased in Italy back in 1973.

However, recent interviews have revealed the extent of Margolyes’ ongoing health battles, leaving fans deeply concerned.

The actress has been remarkably open about her physical decline, sharing updates that have left many devastated.

Margolyes’ health struggles are not new.

In May 2023, she was hospitalized for a chest infection at the Royal Brompton Hospital in Chelsea, London. Later that year, she underwent a transcatheter aortic valve replacement to avoid future open-heart surgeries.

“I’ve got a cow’s heart now,” she joked about the procedure. “Well, not the whole heart. I’ve had an aortic valve replaced by a cow’s aortic valve.”

She previously revealed that she believes she ‘doesn’t have long left to live’ and estimates she may have five or six years remaining.

The actress has also been diagnosed with spinal stenosis, a condition that causes narrowing of the spinal canal and puts pressure on the spinal cord. This condition has forced her to register as disabled and rely on various mobility aids, including canes, walkers, wheelchairs, and a mobility scooter.

“I can’t walk very well, and I’m registered disabled,” Margolyes explained per Yahoo. “I use all kinds of assistance. I’ve got two sticks and a walker, and they’re such a bore, but I’ve just got a mobility scooter, which is a lot of fun.”

Now, Margolyes has issued another worrying update.

“I’ve let my body down,” she confessed in a recent interview with Weekend Magazine.

“I haven’t taken care of it. I have to walk with a walker now. I wish I’d done exercise. It’s the most ghastly waste of time, except that it keeps you going. So, I’m foolish.”

The actress attributes many of her health problems to her weight and admits to feeling defeated by her ongoing issues.

When asked about trying Ozempic, the diabetes medication that some use for weight loss, she firmly declined: “Absolutely not. That’s for diabetics. You shouldn’t take medicine meant for people who are really sick.”

Perhaps most heartbreaking of all, Margolyes has been remarkably candid about her mortality and end-of-life plans.

“I don’t want to go through a slowly diminishing period of pain and embarrassment,” she stated.

“If a stroke meant I couldn’t speak, or I was doubly incontinent, or I lost my mind completely, I would ask to be put down. That’s because I want to be who I am. I don’t want to be less than I can be.”

Despite her fears about physical decline, Margolyes has said she is not afraid of death itself.

“You can’t help but be aware that the amount of time ahead is less than the time before you,” she reflected.

“I’m still ducking and diving. I’m still open to new experiences. I’m just very conscious that there is no light at the end of the tunnel.”

Even in her struggles, Margolyes has found purpose in helping others facing similar challenges.

She has been praised for her willingness to show publicly how she manages her conditions, inspiring countless individuals to pursue activities they never thought possible.

“I’ve met loads of people who have said I gave them the courage to do things that they never thought they could. So I’m very pleased about that,” Margolyes shared.
