Oscars Viewers All Saying The Same Thing After Watching Opening Speech
Oscars viewers are all saying the same thing after watching this year’s opening ceremony.
Conan O’Brien, the host of the 97th Academy Awards, kicked off the event with a divisive opening skit, roasts at both actors and films, and even a savage dig at Drake.
It began with a shock factor, as the comedian’s opening skit saw him break out of Demi Moore’s body in reference to The Substance.
Unsurprisingly, this went viral online and led to many reactions – while some found it offputting, others thought it started the night with an outrageous tone.
One viewer said: “BIG yikes Conan. WTF.”
Another added: “Yeah, soooo this opening Substance monologue is actually offensive, but okay.”
“This absolutely traumatized my five-year-old,” commented a third. “Insane to go from Somewhere over the rainbow to this.”
O’Brien first roasted Karla Sofía Gascón, who recently faced controversy surrounding her offensive resurfaced tweets.
The years-old tweets included racially charged remarks, which were also considered antisemitic and xenophobic.
Gascón, who is the first openly trans woman to be nominated for a best actress Oscar, has since apologized and participated in an hour-long interview with CNN en Español to defend herself.
The actress kept a low profile in the weeks leading up to the Oscars, noticeably missing the SAG and Critic Choice Awards.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix, which released Emilia Pérez, covered Gascón’s travel costs – it’s customary for studios to cover travel for their Oscar nominees.
Taking aim at Gascón, O’Brien said that if the actress did decide to tweet tonight, she should remember that his name is Jimmy Kimmel – who hosted last year’s event.
“Karla Sofía Gascón is here tonight. And Karla, if you are going to tweet about the Oscars, my name is Jimmy Kimmel,” he joked.
O’Brien didn’t stop there.
The comedian noted that Best Picture nominee Anora ‘uses the F-word 479 times,’ adding that the number was ‘three more than the record set by Karla Sofía Gascón’s publicist.’
At the mention of her name, Gascón put up her hands in prayers to the host.
O’Brien then roasted Adam Sandler, who turned up to the red carpet event wearing a sweatshirt.
“Adam, what are you wearing?” he called out to the actor. “You’re dressed like a guy playing video poker at 2 a.m.”
“Nobody even thought about what I was wearing until you brought it up,” Sandler responded. “I like the way I look. Because I’m a good person. I don’t care about what I wear and what I don’t wear. My snazzy gym shorts and fluffy sweatshirt offend you so much that you had to mock me in front of my peers!”
Then, halfway through the Oscars, O’Brien referred to the Drake-Kendrick Lamar feud.
Lamar performed his diss track ‘Not Like Us’ during his Super Bowl Halftime show – Drake filed a lawsuit against Universal Music Group over the track as a result of being referred to as a ‘p***phile.’
When performing ‘Not Like Us’ at the Super Bowl, Lamar said: “I want to perform they favorite song, but you know they love to sue,” before going ahead and dropping the word ‘p***philes.’
Referencing this during the Oscars’ ‘halftime,’ O’Brien said: “Well, we’re halfway through the show, which means it’s time for Kendrick Lamar to come out and call Drake a p***phile.”
After watching O’Brien host the Oscars, people have rushed to social media and reacted, with many saying the same thing.
One viewer wrote: “Conan O’ Brien is the most UNFUNNY person to ever host an award show. Period.”
Another added: “I was so excited to have Conan O’Brien as a host, but this monologue has been endlessly boring.”
“Conan O’Brien’s hosting is flat,” a third simply said.
