Reese Witherspoon Admits She’s Ended Friendship With A-List Actor After Star ‘Roasted’ Her At Awards Ceremony
Reese Witherspoon has revealed that a friendship with a well-known Hollywood star came to an abrupt end after she made some ill-judged jokes at an awards ceremony.
The Legally Blonde actress shared that her attempt at humor during the event ultimately led to the breakdown of their relationship, as the other star has not spoken to her since.
While lighthearted teasing is often a staple of close friendships, Witherspoon’s experience proves that not all jokes are taken in stride.
The actress opened up about the incident during a recent interview.
Although she did not disclose which awards ceremony it was, she admitted that the evening still haunts her.
She explained to People: “So this friend of mine, who I didn’t really know that well but she was a very serious, proper actress, she asked me to give her an award.”
Having never attended that particular event before, Witherspoon assumed that the tone would be similar to that of a roast – a comedic format where playful jabs are expected. “So I got up and roasted her,” she recalled.
However, she soon realized that the event was far from a casual comedy affair. Instead, it was a sophisticated and refined occasion, making her jokes feel out of place.
“It was more of a ‘British,’ ‘elegant,’ and ‘classy’ affair,” she admitted, adding that her quips, including one about a personal grooming experience, were not well received.
“I was like, ‘Remember the time we got laser hair removal?’” she said. “I’m still embarrassed about it.”
As a result, the actress she was joking about has since cut off contact. “I’m not even kidding—we’re not friends anymore,” Witherspoon revealed.
“I think she doesn’t like me anymore. I thought it was so funny, and it was just, I had the wrong audience. It was pretty bad. Yeah. Not even kidding, she doesn’t talk to me anymore. Oh well.”
Though she didn’t name the individual involved, online speculation suggests it may have been a well-known British actress whose name rhymes with ‘Wate Kinslet,’ with the incident reportedly taking place at an event in the early 2000s.
However, Witherspoon has set the record straight – she and Kate Winslet are still good friends.
The Oscar-winning actress addressed the swirling speculation on her Instagram story, clarifying that Winslet is not the unnamed industry friend who allegedly cut ties with her after an awards speech mishap.
“Hey guys. Just spoke to my very dear friend for years, Kate W. We laughed about this stupidity,” Witherspoon wrote.
“Please do not believe the internet. We are good friends and have never had any falling out.”
Despite the online theories, others pointed out that Winslet and Witherspoon remained close for years after the 2007 event.
The two were seen presenting together at the 2016 Oscars and were even photographed backstage laughing and hugging – a clear sign their friendship remained intact.
Witherspoon firmly denied the claims of a rift, doubling down in another Instagram story: “This is completely UNTRUE … so silly!”
