Over the last few years, Sabrina Carpenter has quickly climbed up the ranks from Disney child star to one of the biggest pop stars in the world, bagging dozens of awards along the way.

While the Espresso singer has become a household name thanks to her raunchy lyrics and instantly recognisable vocals, it turns out she’s not the only famous voice in her family.

Sabrina’s launch to fame first came when she came third in the Next Miley Cyrus Project, in 2010, before being cast as Maya Hart on Girl Meets World, which ran on Disney until 2017.

Despite getting her break on the small screen, a career in music was still the main aim for the Manchild signer, and in 2014 Sabrina signed a five album deal with Disney-owned Hollywood Records.

With over a decade of experience in the spotlight at the age of 26, you could say the pop star got a head start by watching her famous family member in action.

“People won’t let me evolve”

Sabrina has opened up about the challenges she has faced in transitioning from a child star as she’s grown and evolved.

Speaking with Variety, the pop star said: “I think it wouldn’t matter so much if I wasn’t a childhood figure for some people.

“But I also can’t really help that. It’s not my fault that I got a job when I was 12 and you won’t let me evolve.”

She has also been open about her early aspirations, noting that she always wanted to ’embrace’ her ‘s**uality’ more as she got older, despite starting out on Disney channel.

“I always thought, ‘When I grow up, then I get to embrace my sexuality more,'” she added. “But I don’t even know what that means yet!”

“I wish I’d had more open conversations about all of it when I was younger, but people feel too scared to talk about it.”

The ‘Manchild’ singer said she’s keen to look back on this point in her career as the time she ‘didn’t hold back.’

She said: “I wore the skirts I wanted to wear; I spoke about things in a way that I won’t regret, because I was very open. I think that’s all that matters.”

Album cover backlash

The star received a lot of backlash from users online, after showcasing her most recent album cover – Man’s Best Friend.

The cover depicts her on all fours, with what appears to be a male hand pulling at her hair, with many branding it as ‘anti-progressive.’

One user said: “I think it’s more so that we’ve spent the last few decades pushing back on the s**ualization of young women, so it feels sort of anti-progressive when we see that kind of s**ualization of young women again.”

Another added: “I felt like the outrage was it looked like internalized misogyny. The people complaining weren’t being prudish, but they were mad it was an extreme version of the male gaze.”

But many others branded it a class-act in the art of marketing for her new record.

One wrote: “Sabrina Carpenter knew the album cover was going to be controversial, and was expecting the debate to generate hype and publicity for Man’s Best Friend.”

As a second also said: “All it showed for sure is that Sabrina Carpenter is highly adept at viral marketing.”

A little known famous aunty

As it turns out, Sabrina’s aunty is the award-winning Nancy Cartwright, who is best known for voicing Bart Simpson in The Simpsons, for nearly four decades. The 68-year-old voice actor also plays Maggie Simpson, Nelson Muntz, Ralph Wiggum and Todd Flanders in the iconic show.

The revelation recently came to light when Nancy was doing a question and answer session with her followers on TikTok, when someone asked her about the famous relation.

Reading out the question, which asked if it was true she that Sabrina was her niece, she exclaimed: “Yes, absolutely! Isn’t that amazing when you find out that somebody that maybe you’ve known me for a little while, doing this little 10-year-old boy for like 35 some years, and some of you for like way less than that – find out that I’m related to this superstar?”

“She’s pretty amazing,” the voice actor added, in the video, which was captioned: “The rumours are true! Sabrina Carpenter is my niece!”

Unsurprisingly, fans were pretty amazed by the familial connection, with one commenting: “Sabrina Carpenter is related to Bart Simpson, Ay, caramber.”

A second added: “Being a fan of The Simpsons and loving Sabrina Carpenter, this is so cool to find this out.”

“But why does Sabrina being related to Bart Simpson make so much sense?” a third joked. “It really is a family attitude.”

Meanwhile, others suggested that Nancy is the real ‘superstar’ in the family, with one person suggesting she was the voice of their generation.

Indeed, the actor has had a fruitful career in her long-standing role playing Bart, which has earned her a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Voice-Over Performance and an Annie Award for Best Voice Acting in the Field of Animation.

Her talents don’t end there though, with the performer also playing a number of other famous characters, including Chuckie on Rugrats, Rufus in Kim Possible, Mindy in Animaniacs and many more.

Sabrina confirmed the family connection

In 2021, Sabrina addressed her famous connection, telling Capital FM hosts it was ‘the coolest thing in the world’ growing up with Nancy as her aunt.

During the chat with Roman Kemp, the host said: “Now I am actually in love with one of your family members. Now correct me if I’m wrong, because when I first heard this, I couldn’t believe it but your aunt is the voice of Bart Simpson.”

After Sabrina confirmed the news, he continued: “Bart Simpson is what I grew up on, that’s the legend. Your aunt is Nancy Cartwright, that is unreal.”

She even revealed that Nancy would sometimes use her Bart Simpson voice to get restaurant tables, which must’ve been quite the flex for a young girl seeking a career in the spotlight.

Over the last few years, however, Sabrina has reached new levels of fame, particularly since serving as a supporting act for Taylor Swift on the Eras Tour across Latin America, Australia and Singapore between from 2023 to 2024, which she later revealed as the inspiration behind her Short n’ Sweet tour.

So, how long is it going to be until Sabrina joins the long list of celebrities who have made cameos on The Simpsons? That would be the ultimate family crossover.
