Sam Neill’s Real Cause Of Death Confirmed As Family Shut Down ‘Falsehoods’
Sam Neill’s family have issued a statement revealing the late actor’s cause of death, in a bid to shut down the ‘inaccuracies and outright falsehoods’ surrounding his passing.
The 78-year-old passed away ‘suddenly and unexpectedly’ on July 14, just months after celebrating becoming cancer free.
His family confirms his sudden death
Neill’s family shared the heartbreaking news in a statement posted across his official social media accounts.
“It is with immense sadness that the whānau of Sam Neill share the news of his passing,” they wrote.
“Sam was surrounded by family and passed with the dignity that has characterised his whole life.”
The statement went on to say: “The loss was sudden and unexpected, but blessed by the fact that Sam remained cancer free.”
The family also thanked the medical team at St Vincent’s Private Hospital in Sydney for the care they gave Neill and requested privacy as they mourned his passing.
The announcement came as a shock, particularly because Neill had spent years battling a rare and aggressive form of blood cancer.
Although his loved ones emphasized that his cancer had not returned, they initially offered no further details about what had caused his death.
That lack of explanation left many fans stunned, especially after Neill had recently shared encouraging news about his health.
Sam Neill beat a rare blood cancer
In 2023, Neill publicly revealed that he had been diagnosed with stage-three angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma, an uncommon and aggressive type of non-Hodgkin lymphoma.
He first became concerned after discovering swollen glands while promoting Jurassic World Dominion in 2022, before later undergoing chemotherapy.
The actor opened up about his diagnosis while promoting his memoir, Did I Ever Tell You This?, explaining that writing the book during treatment gave him something meaningful to focus on.
Despite the seriousness of his illness, Neill remained remarkably open about mortality. Speaking to the Guardian, he said he was not afraid of dying, though he admitted it would be “annoying” because he still hoped to spend more time with his family, grandchildren, and beloved vineyard.
Eventually, the chemotherapy stopped being effective, leaving the actor with few remaining treatment options.
Earlier in 2026, Neill revealed he had enrolled in an Australian clinical trial for CAR T-cell therapy, an advanced treatment that modifies a patient’s own immune cells to attack cancer.
The outcome exceeded expectations.
“I’ve had a scan just now, and there is no cancer in my body,” he said while sharing the update. This is an extraordinary thing.”
When announcing his death, his family again confirmed that he was still cancer-free, making it clear that the lymphoma itself was not believed to have caused his passing.
However, reports suggest the intensive treatments he endured had left a lasting impact on both his immune system and his overall health.
Reports from Sam Neill’s former partner
Following the news of his death, journalist Laura Tingle, who was quietly in a relationship with the actor from 2018 to 2021, said her former partner had been ‘pretty sick’ in recent weeks.
“He’d had a lot of chemo and a lot of immunotherapy and, thankfully, it finally cleared him of the blood cancer that he had,” she told ABC Radio Sydney, via news.com.au.
“But that left him pretty compromised in terms of his immune system.”
Tingle said his loved ones had been willing him to recover, but believed the latest illness had simply become too much for his body.
“He’s been pretty sick for the last couple of weeks, and everybody who loved him has been willing him on from near and far,” she said.
“But I think it was just a bit too much to recover from one more time.”
Family confirm cause of death
Following Tingle’s comments, it appears Neill’s family are eager to set the record straight on his cause of death, while thanking those close to him for respecting his privacy.
“Sam passed away from pneumonia,” Neill’s longtime representative, Philip Grenz, said the statement, as per USA Today.
“Prior to becoming sick, he had valiantly fought and beaten lymphoma through a new treatment called CAR-T therapy.”
The statement continued: “As Sam was an intensely private man who loathed a fuss, his family will honor him with a private family memorial at his farm in New Zealand at a still-undetermined later date.
“I’d like to thank those who were truly close to Sam for considering his privacy with the respect he earned and his loved ones need and deserve during this immeasurably difficult time.”
