Sam Neill’s cause of death has been confirmed by authorities following his tragic passing aged 78.

The acclaimed actor died in Sydney on Monday, July 13, surrounded by members of his family, just months after announcing that treatment had left him cancer-free.

His family initially described the loss as ‘sudden and unexpected’ but did not disclose what had happened, prompting questions from heartbroken fans around the world.

Further details have now emerged from people close to Neill, including a former partner and one of his longtime co-stars, who said he had been seriously unwell in the weeks before his death.

His family announced his sudden death

Neill’s family confirmed the news in a statement shared on his social-media accounts.

“It is with immense sadness that the whānau of Sam Neill share the news of his passing,” they said.

“Sam was surrounded by family and passed with the dignity that has characterised his whole life.”

The statement continued: “The loss was sudden and unexpected, but blessed by the fact that Sam remained cancer free.”

His family also expressed their gratitude to the staff at St Vincent’s Private Hospital in Sydney for the care he received and asked the public to respect their privacy while they processed the loss.

The wording was particularly striking because Neill had spent several years receiving treatment for a rare and aggressive blood cancer.

Although his family made clear that the disease had not returned, they did not initially provide any further explanation for his death.

That uncertainty made the announcement even more shocking for fans who had recently celebrated Neill’s positive health update.

Sam Neill had overcome a rare blood cancer

Neill revealed in 2023 that he had been diagnosed with stage-three angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma, a rare form of non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

He first noticed swollen glands while promoting Jurassic World Dominion in 2022 and subsequently began chemotherapy.

The actor disclosed his diagnosis while promoting his memoir, Did I Ever Tell You This?, explaining that he began writing the book while receiving treatment because he needed something to occupy his mind.

Neill was characteristically candid about the prospect of death, telling The Guardian that he was not frightened by it but would find it “annoying” because he still wanted more time with his family, grandchildren and vineyard.

The initial chemotherapy eventually stopped working, leaving the actor with limited options.

Earlier in 2026, Neill revealed that he had taken part in an Australian clinical trial involving CAR T-cell therapy, a treatment in which a patient’s immune cells are modified to target cancer.

The results appeared remarkable.

“I’ve had a scan just now, and there is no cancer in my body,” he said while sharing the update. This is an extraordinary thing.”

His family reiterated that he remained cancer-free when announcing his death, making it clear that the lymphoma itself was not believed to have killed him.

However, the intensive treatment he underwent reportedly had lasting consequences for his immune system and overall health.

Tributes celebrated more than 50 years on screen

News of Neill’s death prompted an enormous outpouring of grief from colleagues who had worked with him throughout his career.

Steven Spielberg, who directed him as palaeontologist Dr Alan Grant in 1993’s Jurassic Park, remembered Neill as a vital part of the franchise’s extended family.

Laura Dern, who starred opposite him as Dr Ellie Sattler, described Neill as her “beloved lifetime friend” and praised his loyalty, humour and kindness.

Jeff Goldblum, Nicole Kidman, Cillian Murphy, Russell Crowe, Richard E. Grant and numerous other actors also shared tributes, with many describing Neill as a warm, generous and deeply intelligent colleague.

Kidman, who worked with Neill on the 1989 thriller Dead Calm, said they met when she was just 18 and that he took her under his wing.

“He was charming, kind, funny, and intelligent,” she said, according to news.com.au.

“He will be greatly missed, and my heart goes out to his family.”

New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon called the actor “one of the greats” and credited him with helping establish the country’s film industry as a major cultural export.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said Neill had earned a special place in Australian hearts and would be ‘much mourned and long remembered.’

He became a star after years of quiet success

Born Nigel John Dermot Neill in Omagh, Northern Ireland, in 1947, the actor moved to New Zealand with his family at the age of seven.

He adopted the name Sam while still a child, later explaining that arriving at school with the name Nigel and an English accent made him an easy target.

His breakthrough arrived in the 1977 New Zealand film Sleeping Dogs, before he gained international attention through roles in My Brilliant Career, Possession, Omen III: The Final Conflict and A Cry in the Dark.

Neill’s career moved effortlessly between major Hollywood productions and smaller arthouse films.

He starred in The Hunt for Red October, The Piano, Dead Calm, Event Horizon, Hunt for the Wilderpeople, Peaky Blinders and The Tudors, among many other projects.

However, his most famous performance came as Dr Alan Grant in Jurassic Park.

He returned to the franchise for Jurassic Park III in 2001 and reunited with Dern and Goldblum in Jurassic World Dominion in 2022.

Neill remained professionally active late into his life and is expected to appear posthumously in future projects, including Godzilla x Kong: Supernova and The Last Resort.

Away from acting, he ran the Two Paddocks vineyard in New Zealand’s Central Otago region and became known online for sharing funny videos featuring his farm animals.

He was also an environmental campaigner and recently fronted a documentary opposing a proposed gold mine near his vineyard.

His final public message became a place of remembrance

Weeks before his death, Neill attended the ARIA Hall of Fame Awards in Sydney.

In his final Instagram post, he shared a smiling photograph with Australian singer Kate Ceberano and used the accompanying message to celebrate several women he admired.

“ARIA HALL of FAME awards! Great night in Sydney,” he wrote.

“Four women I have idolised for decades were honoured.”

He praised Ceberano, Jenny Morris and sisters Vika and Linda Bull, before describing former New Zealand prime minister Jacinda Ardern as “another hero.”

Following his death, fans flooded the post with tributes, transforming what had been a joyful update into an informal online memorial.

Many thanked Neill for the films that had shaped their childhoods, while others said he would forever be remembered as Dr Alan Grant.

Sam Neill’s cause of death

Further information about Neill’s final weeks has now emerged from people close to him.

According to news.com.au, journalist Laura Tingle, who was previously in a relationship with Neill, said he had been ‘pretty sick’ for several weeks and that his body had become exhausted after years of intensive treatment.

“He’d had a lot of chemo and a lot of immunotherapy and, thankfully, it finally cleared him of the blood cancer that he had,” she told ABC Radio Sydney.

“But that left him pretty compromised in terms of his immune system.”

Tingle said his loved ones had been willing him to recover, but believed the latest illness had simply become too much for his body.

“He’s been pretty sick for the last couple of weeks, and everybody who loved him has been willing him on from near and far,” she said.

“But I think it was just a bit too much to recover from one more time.”

Rima Te Wiata, Neill’s friend and Hunt for the Wilderpeople co-star, also told the New Zealand Herald that the actor had recently been suffering from a serious lung infection.

Reports have subsequently identified the illness as pneumonia, which proved fatal after Neill’s cancer treatment left his immune system weakened.

While Neill had successfully beaten his lymphoma and remained cancer-free, his reported cause of death was complications from pneumonia.
