Sean Ono Lennon has revealed that there is one Taylor Swift lyric he simply cannot get on board with.

The son of music icons John Lennon and Yoko Ono has built a notable career of his own, while remaining deeply committed to preserving his father’s artistic legacy.

In recent years, Lennon has opened up about a particular lyric by Swift which makes him feel ‘uncomfortable,’ despite previously coming to the singer’s defense against Donald Trump.

Sean Ono Lennon has a musical legacy of his own

While many recognize him because of his famous parents, Lennon has spent decades establishing himself as a respected musician and producer.

Over the years, he has performed with a range of acts including Cibo Matto, The Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger, The Claypool Lennon Delirium, and the Plastic Ono Band. He also launched a solo career with Into the Sun in 1998, later following it up with Friendly Fire in 2006. Beyond performing, Lennon has worked behind the scenes as a producer for artists such as Black Lips.

He has frequently spoken about the significance of his father’s work and why he feels responsible for ensuring it continues to resonate with future generations.

“One thing that distinguishes my dad’s solo career is how personal his lyrics became. It is like a diary, and it is my duty to bring attention to my father’s music. Not just my duty to him, but a duty to the world,” he shared with The Times.

Lennon has also made it clear that protecting that legacy remains a priority.

“With the world as it is now, people have forgotten so many things that I never imagined could be forgotten,” he said. “I refuse to let that happen to this music, it means too much to me.”

Sean Ono Lennon previously defended Taylor Swift

Despite not being an avid listener of Swift’s music, Lennon recently found himself defending the pop superstar after US president Donald Trump publicly criticized her.

Earlier this month, the Republican presidential nominee posted: “I HATE TAYLOR SWIFT” on Truth Social after Swift formally endorsed Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris.

Responding on X, formerly Twitter, Lennon pushed back against Trump’s remarks, writing: “Hating on Taylor Swift is not a good look.”

His support surprised some followers because he later admitted he was not especially familiar with Swift’s catalog.

“I can’t think of a single song, so I don’t really know if I like it or not,” he wrote, explaining that he struggled to name any of her tracks.

Why Lennon believes Swift deserves respect

Although he acknowledged his limited knowledge of Swift’s music, Lennon was quick to praise her accomplishments and influence.

He described the singer as a ‘uniquely successful American,’ pointing to her unprecedented career achievements.

“A young woman who has done things in a way that no one has done before her,” he wrote.

Lennon continued by arguing that Swift’s success should be celebrated regardless of political differences.

“She is the kind of American that should be respected and in fact treasured. We need more, not less, Taylor Swifts in our world. People who thrive continually and consistently are exactly the kind of person both parties should embrace.”

He also took issue with Trump’s approach, calling the former president an ‘old grumpy dude’ and suggesting there were more constructive ways to respond to Swift’s endorsement.

According to Lennon, a more measured statement might have been: “She is a brilliant young woman. I have a lot of respect for what she has accomplished. I don’t believe she knows the reality of the party she is endorsing.”

The Taylor Swift lyric that makes him uncomfortable

Just a day after defending Swift, Lennon returned to social media to clarify that there was, in fact, one of her songs he remembered.

“I can’t believe I forgot this one but I actually remember a Taylor song called Bad Blood (or something),” he wrote.

The track came to mind because of a particular lyric choice that he said had always bothered him. Lennon explained that hearing the line rhyme ‘mad love’ with ‘bad blood’ made him uncomfortable.

Even so, he emphasized that his criticism was limited to that one lyric and was not meant as a broader attack on Swift or her music.

“I have nothing against her. I have a lot of respect for what she has accomplished. I certainly could never do what she does,” he concluded.
