Shane Gillis’ ‘Sick’ Joke About Chelsea Handler At Roast Sparks Fury
Shane Gillis’ ‘sick’ joke about Chelsea Handler at a comedy roast has sparked fury online.
Netflix’s latest celebrity roast may have been intended as a night of brutal comedy aimed at Kevin Hart, but it was Shane Gillis and Chelsea Handler who ended up dominating the conversation afterward.
Their tense exchange during the Netflix Is A Joke roast quickly exploded online, with fans debating whether the comics crossed the line or simply did what roasts are designed to do: offend everyone in the room.
Handler and Gillis are no strangers to controversy. Handler, a longtime comedian and former late-night host, has built her career on provocative humor, outspoken political commentary, and headline-making relationships.
Gillis, meanwhile, remains one of stand-up’s most polarizing names after his 2019 firing from Saturday Night Live over resurfaced podcast clips containing anti-Asian slurs.
Since then, he has rebuilt his career through podcasts, sold-out comedy tours, and Netflix specials, often leaning into his reputation as an unapologetic comic.
That history made their clash at the Kevin Hart roast feel especially combustible from the start.
A roast packed with big names and bigger shots
The roast, held as part of the 2026 Netflix Is A Joke festival, featured a stacked lineup that included Tom Brady, Pete Davidson, Lizzo, Usher, Jeff Ross, Tony Hinchcliffe, Regina Hall, and Draymond Green.
Kevin Hart, who has long embraced roast culture, sat at the center of the chaos as comedians took turns mocking everything from his height to his career and personal life.
But viewers quickly noticed that the sharpest energy in the room seemed directed elsewhere.
Multiple audience members and social media users commented on what appeared to be genuine hostility between Handler and several comics onstage, particularly Gillis and Hinchcliffe.
While roast events traditionally blur the line between performance and personal attacks, fans online claimed the tension felt ‘real.’
“There was some serious animosity between Chelsea Handler and the entire roast cast,” one viewer wrote on X after the special aired.
Others noted that Handler appeared visibly irritated throughout portions of the show, even while attempting to laugh off jokes aimed at her.
One Reddit user claiming to have attended the event wrote: “I was there. Not sure what it looked like on TV, but she seemed legit p***ed about his jokes.”
Another added: “TV looked like she had something personal against Shane and Tony.”
The reactions quickly spread across Reddit and X, turning clips from the roast into viral talking points overnight.
Chelsea Handler’s controversial history resurfaces
As the clips circulated, internet users began revisiting several controversial moments from Handler’s past.
One topic that resurfaced involved Handler previously revealing she attended a dinner party at Jeffrey Epstein’s home years before his crimes became widely known publicly.
Handler discussed the dinner during a 2025 appearance on Rob Lowe’s podcast, explaining that she had attended without understanding who Epstein was at the time.
“I did go to dinner at Jeffrey Epstein’s house,” Handler said during the podcast appearance. “I didn’t know who Jeffrey Epstein was.”
She added that Katie Couric accompanied her and that other guests allegedly included Woody Allen, Charlie Rose, and Prince Andrew. Handler also claimed she confronted Allen during the evening over longstanding allegations surrounding him.
Those comments returned to public discussion almost immediately after the roast aired.
At the same time, Handler’s political commentary and outspoken criticism of conservative figures also resurfaced in online debates surrounding the roast. Some social media users defended Gillis’ jokes as typical roast humor, while others accused him of deliberately targeting Handler with politically loaded attacks.
The discourse soon expanded beyond comedy itself, touching on political affiliations, celebrity hypocrisy, cancel culture, and the boundaries of offensive humor.

Fans debate whether the roast went too far
Roasts have always operated on the idea that nothing is off-limits. But the increasingly polarized reaction to the Hart special revealed how differently audiences now interpret edgy comedy.
Some viewers argued Gillis delivered exactly the kind of shocking material expected at a roast.
“That’s a solid joke,” one Reddit commenter wrote.
Others criticized the material as unnecessarily inflammatory, particularly because several jokes referenced religion, abortion, and Epstein.
The backlash intensified further because Gillis himself remains tied to controversy over his past remarks about Asian people.
Handler directly referenced that history during her comeback onstage, reviving debate around the comic’s previous scandal and whether audiences have fully forgiven him.
Meanwhile, some viewers focused less on the jokes themselves and more on the uncomfortable atmosphere in the room, Parade reports.
“Chelsea Handler mad as hell about that Zionist comment,” one user posted online.
Another wrote, “She looked like she was trying to keep a straight face but was pissed during a lot of the jokes.”
Others defended Handler’s reaction, arguing that roast culture sometimes disguises genuinely personal attacks under the banner of comedy.
The online arguments soon spiraled into broader political debates, especially after some commenters brought up Gillis’ perceived political leanings and past appearances alongside Donald Trump. Supporters pushed back, pointing to comments Gillis has previously made criticizing Trump and war politics.
The controversy ultimately became far bigger than Kevin Hart’s roast itself.
The joke that sparked the firestorm
The moment at the center of the backlash came when Gillis introduced Handler with a string of increasingly brutal jokes that immediately stunned the audience.
“Chelsea is a Zionist,” Gillis said. “Not saying that’s a good or bad thing.”
He then added, “Speaking of dead kids, she’s a big fan of abortions.”
The audience reacted audibly before Gillis escalated things further by referencing Handler’s past Epstein dinner revelation.
“Speaking of tossing tiny shrimp into a child’s mouth, Chelsea Handler went to dinner at Jeffrey Epstein’s house in 2010,” he said. “Look it up, there’s articles. It wasn’t like a big party. There was like seven people there. It was like Prince Andrew and Woody Allen were there.”
When Handler later took the stage, she fired back with a pointed jab referencing Gillis’ own controversy.
“Shane, just so you know, Judaism and Zionism are two different things,” she said. “Just like how Chinatown and Koreatown are two different things, but your favorite slur works in both places.”
The crowd erupted, but online audiences remained divided. Some praised Handler’s comeback as devastating, while others argued Gillis had technically never conflated Judaism with Zionism in the first place.
Either way, the exchange instantly became the defining moment of the roast — and one of the most talked-about comedy controversies of the year.
