Taylor Swift And Travis Kelce Face Backlash Over One Controversial Wedding Guest
Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce are facing backlash over one controversial guest at their wedding.
Swift and Kelce’s lavish New York wedding has been one of the most talked-about celebrity events of the year.
The superstar couple tied the knot at Madison Square Garden on July 3 in front of around 1,000 guests, with Adam Sandler officiating the ceremony and a guest list packed with Hollywood stars, musicians, athletes and lifelong friends.
The highly secretive event quickly dominated headlines, with fans dissecting everything from Swift’s custom Dior wedding dress to the famous faces in attendance.
Much of the early conversation centered on who wasn’t there.
Longtime friends Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds were notably absent, with multiple outlets reporting the friendship had cooled following the actress’s legal battle with It Ends With Us director Justin Baldoni.
The couple were instead spotted at their daughter Betty’s horse show in Lake Placid, New York, while Swift celebrated with some of her closest friends and family.
According to People, Lively and Reynolds did not attend either the rehearsal dinner or the wedding itself, while Page Six reported that Swift had decided not to invite the couple following months of reported tension.
Instead, guests included celebrities such as Selena Gomez, Gigi Hadid, Bradley Cooper, Dakota Johnson, Ed Sheeran, Hugh Grant, Kelsea Ballerini, Lena Dunham, Ellie Goulding and NFL stars, while Swift’s brother Austin served as her man of honour and Jason Kelce acted as his brother’s best man.
However, just days after the celebrations, attention has shifted away from who wasn’t invited, and onto one guest who was.
Wedding guest list comes under scrutiny
Given Swift’s outspoken support for a number of social and political causes over the years, fans inevitably began combing through the extensive guest list after the ceremony.
While most attendees were either close friends, relatives or familiar celebrity names, one lesser-known guest quickly became the focus of online criticism.
According to Grazia, reports identifying one attendee sparked backlash across social media, with some fans questioning how he came to be invited.
One X user reportedly wrote: “I’m sorry, but this can’t be overlooked.”
Another argued that Swift’s team should have carried out more thorough background checks before finalising the guest list.
The criticism quickly spread across social media platforms as fans attempted to determine how the guest came to be connected to the couple.
Why was the guest invited?
Despite speculation online, reports suggest that the controversial guest’s invitation was unlikely to have come through a direct friendship with either Swift or Kelce.
He’s is the adoptive father of Reggie King, who is reportedly one of Travis Kelce’s childhood friends.
Several fans on Reddit also pointed out that both the Kelce family and the guest’s family have longstanding ties to Ohio, making the connection appear less surprising.
Many fans argued that he likely attended as part of Kelce’s extended circle rather than because of any personal relationship with Swift herself.
One X user reportedly wrote: “He was in the wedding because he’s the adoptive father of one of Travis’s childhood friends, Reggie King. Taylor’s team should have done a background check on him though.”
Another responded: “That is entirely on her team. He was invited as a family member of one of Travis’s close friends that he grew up with… There’s no reason to think she knows her husband’s friend’s dad’s job.”
Others urged people not to jump to conclusions, arguing that with a guest list reportedly approaching 1,000 people, it would be unrealistic to assume the couple personally vetted every attendee’s professional background.
Fans questioned one unexpected attendee
The guest in question was Steven Demetriou, Executive Chair of engineering and government contractor Amentum and the former CEO of Jacobs Engineering.
Although Demetriou is not a celebrity, his company has recently attracted significant public attention.
Earlier this year, Amentum was awarded a contract to operate Camp East Montana, an ICE immigration detention facility in Texas.
The detention centre has since faced allegations regarding conditions inside the facility, as well as reports of detainee deaths, leading to increased scrutiny surrounding the contract.
It is Demetriou’s association with Amentum that prompted criticism from some Swift fans online, particularly given widespread public debate surrounding ICE and immigration policy in recent months.
Several social media users questioned whether Swift, who has publicly spoken in favour of protecting human rights and previously endorsed Democratic candidates, would knowingly invite someone connected to the company.
Swift has previously spoken about politics
Part of the reason the story has generated so much attention is because Swift has been increasingly vocal about politics in recent years.
In 2018, the singer publicly endorsed Democratic candidates for the first time, saying she would “always cast my vote based on which candidate will protect and fight for the human rights I believe we all deserve.”
She has also criticised Donald Trump in previous interviews, telling The Guardian in 2019 that America should remain a place where people are free to ‘disagree, dissent, debate.’
Meanwhile, Travis Kelce has rarely spoken publicly about his own political views, although he has previously supported COVID-19 vaccination campaigns, spoken in support of Black Lives Matter and taken part in NFL national anthem demonstrations.
His sister-in-law, Kylie Kelce, has also previously said her political views ‘aggressively lean’ to the left.
Because of that public image, some fans questioned whether Demetriou’s attendance aligned with the values they associate with the couple.
However, there is no evidence that either Swift or Kelce has publicly commented on the controversy, nor have they addressed the online criticism surrounding the guest list.
The newlyweds remain silent
Despite the online debate, neither Swift nor Kelce has responded publicly to the criticism.
Likewise, there is no suggestion that Demetriou attended the wedding in any official capacity beyond being connected to Kelce’s wider circle of friends and family.
As with many celebrity weddings, particularly one involving two of the world‘s biggest stars, the guest list has inevitably become almost as closely scrutinised as the ceremony itself.
In the days immediately after the wedding, headlines focused largely on the absence of Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds following reports of their friendship with Swift cooling after the Justin Baldoni legal battle.
Now, however, the conversation has shifted to one guest whose appearance few people initially noticed.
