Grey’s Anatomy star Eric Dane has issued an update after he announced he was suffering from ALS earlier this year.

The 53-year-old actor, best known for playing Dr. Mark Sloan on Grey’s Anatomy, announced in April that he had been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) – a progressive neurological disease that attacks nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, leading to muscle weakening and eventual paralysis.

At the time, he told People: “I have been diagnosed with ALS.

“I am grateful to have my loving family by my side as we navigate this next chapter.

“I kindly ask that you give my family and I privacy during this time.”

Since making his diagnosis public, Dane has been open about the impact of the condition.

He has lost function in his right arm and continues to struggle with limited movement in his left arm and legs.

Despite this, the actor has remained active in raising awareness and pushing for further research into ALS.

What is ALS?

ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, gradually causes motor neurons to degenerate and die. This prevents the brain from sending signals to the muscles, leading to muscle weakness, twitching, and wasting.

The disease can affect movement, speech, swallowing, and breathing.

While there is no cure, certain treatments and therapies can help manage symptoms and improve quality of life.

Awareness and advocacy

In October, Dane travelled to Washington, DC, alongside advocacy group I AM ALS, to call for increased research and support for neurodegenerative diseases.

During the visit, he met with US Representative Eric Swalwell of California to discuss the realities of living with ALS and the need for faster progress in finding effective treatments.

According to CNN, Dane said the disease is ‘the last thing they want to diagnose anybody with.’

Determined fight

Dane also made an emotional statement about his motivation to keep fighting the condition.

He said: “I have two daughters at home.

“I want to see them, you know, graduate college, and get married and maybe have grandkids.

“You know, I want to be there for all that. So I’m going to fight to the last breath on this one.”

The actor’s openness about his diagnosis has drawn widespread support from fans and colleagues across the entertainment industry, many praising him for using his platform to highlight the realities of ALS and the need for more research.

Dane is married to actress and model Rebecca Gayheart – they share two children.
