Former Child Star Sophie Nyweide Has Died
Former child star Sophie Nyweide has tragically died at age 24.
Nyweide made her acting debut at six years old in the 2006 romantic drama Bella, playing the title character alongside Eduardo Verástegui, Tammy Blanchard, and Manny Perez.
She was also recognized for her role as Jackie Vidales in the 2009 film Mammoth and her appearance in An Invisible Sign in 2010.
The actress’s career slowed down following the latter movie, and according to IMDb, Nyweide’s final role was a 2015 appearance on the ABC hidden-camera reality show What Would You Do?.
The tragic news of Nyweide’s passing was confirmed in an online obituary published on April 17.
The star’s family wrote in the obituary: “She seemed happiest on a movie set, becoming someone else.
“It was a safe place for her, and she relished the casts and crews who nourished her talent and her well-being.”
Nyweide’s mother, Shelly Gibson, confirmed her daughter’s death to The Hollywood Reporter and TMZ.
She said the actress died in Bennington, Vermont, and confirmed that there is an ongoing police investigation.
Although the circumstances surrounding Nyweide’s passing are currently unclear, the obituary statement does touch upon the star’s personal troubles.
It continued: “Sophie was a kind and trusting girl. Often, this left her open to being taken advantage of by others.
“She wrote and drew voraciously, and much of this art depicts the depth she had, and it also represents the pain she suffered.
“Many of her writings and artwork are roadmaps of her struggles and traumas. Even with those roadmaps, diagnoses, and her own revelations, those closest to her, plus therapists, law enforcement officers, and others who tried to help her, are heartbroken [that] their efforts couldn’t save her from her fate.”
The obituary concluded with a request for the public to donate to the R***, Abuse, and Incest National Network, an anti-s**ual violence organization, instead of gifts and flowers.
According to TMZ, Vermont police say the actress was found lifeless on a riverbank and they’re looking into numerous possible causes, including foul play.
Nyweide’s autopsy is still pending and will include a toxicology report.
