Will Ferrell says he’ll never return as one of his most famous characters, much to fans disappointment.

Ferrell is cemented in the world of Hollywood as a much-loved actor, with film roles including The Anchorman, Zoolander, and The Other Guys.

There is one title in particular that fans would love to see him return to, however, the star has made it clear this isn’t going to be on the cards.

Sometimes when the cameras stop rolling, actors and those behind the scenes may not always get along – which is reportedly the case for the cult 2003 Christmas movie Elf.

Although the movie is a source of happy memories for many, for Ferrell, it reportedly wasn’t a title that was a smooth-sailing experience to film.

The Step Brothers star is frequently asked whether he will return as the beloved character, and the answer is always the same.

Although he’s been offered a reported $29 million to return, he is adamant he won’t happen.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Ferrell explained: “I would have had to promote the movie from an honest place, which would’ve been, like, ‘Oh no, it’s not good. I just couldn’t turn down that much money.’

“And I thought, ‘Can I actually say those words? I don’t think I can, so I guess I can’t do the movie.”

In another interview on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, Ferrell also joked: “I just think it would look slightly pathetic if I tried to squeeze back in the elf tights: Buddy the middle-aged elf.”

Before the death of Ferrell’s Elf co-star, James Caan, it was revealed why a sequel never happened.

Caan, who passed away at age 82 in 2022, claimed he and the cast, including Zooey Deschanel and Mary Steenburgen, welcomed the idea of a second Elf movie. However, there were reportedly tensions on set which meant it never went through with production.

The late actor told the radio show The Fan in Cleveland (per The Independent): “We were gonna do it, and I thought ‘Oh my God, I finally have a franchise movie. I can make some money, let my kids do what the hell they want to do.'”

In the same interview, Caan claimed Ferrell and the director of Elf, Jon Favreau, ‘didn’t get along very well.’

The actor said: “Will wanted to do it, and he didn’t want the director, and [Favreau] had it in his contract. It was one of those things.”
