Will Ferrell Says He’ll Never Return As Famous Character After Fall Out With Co-Star
Will Ferrell says he’ll never return as one of his most famous characters following a reported fallout with a co-star.
In the world of film and television, few things excite audiences more than the possibility of a sequel.
When a movie becomes a cultural hit, viewers often assume it’s only a matter of time before the story continues, especially when the characters become just as beloved as the film itself.
But the reality behind the scenes can be far more complicated. Even when fans are eager for another installment, factors like creative direction, studio decisions, or the actors themselves can ultimately prevent a return.

Over the years, many hugely popular films have been left without follow-ups, despite the clear demand. Sometimes the cast simply feels the story has run its course, while in other cases the magic of the original is considered too difficult to recreate.
Now, Ferrell has revealed that he has no plans to revisit one of his most iconic roles – a decision that will likely come as disappointing news to many fans.
The film that sparked sequel hopes
Ferrell has firmly cemented his place in Hollywood as one of comedy’s most recognizable stars, with memorable roles in films such as Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, Zoolander, and The Other Guys.
Yet out of all his films, there’s one in particular that fans have long hoped would receive a sequel.
For years, viewers have wondered whether Ferrell might one day return to his festive role in Elf – the 2003 Christmas comedy that has become a seasonal favorite for millions.
The film follows Buddy, a human who was accidentally raised by Santa’s elves at the North Pole. After discovering he doesn’t quite fit in, Buddy travels to New York City in search of his biological father, spreading Christmas cheer – and plenty of chaos – along the way.
With its heartwarming message, quotable lines, and Ferrell’s unforgettable performance, Elf quickly became a holiday classic.

Naturally, fans have long wondered whether the beloved story might ever continue with a sequel.
Will Ferrell explains why he said no
Although the movie is a source of happy memories for many fans, the filming process reportedly wasn’t entirely smooth sailing for Ferrell.
The Step Brothers star is frequently asked whether he would ever return as Buddy in Elf – but his answer has consistently remained the same.
Despite being offered a reported $29 million to reprise the role, Ferrell has remained firm that a sequel simply isn’t going to happen.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Ferrell explained: “I would have had to promote the movie from an honest place, which would’ve been, like, ‘Oh no, it’s not good. I just couldn’t turn down that much money.’
“And I thought, ‘Can I actually say those words? I don’t think I can, so I guess I can’t do the movie.’”
Speaking in another interview on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, he also joked: “I just think it would look slightly pathetic if I tried to squeeze back in the elf tights: Buddy the middle-aged elf.”

Before the death of Ferrell’s Elf co-star James Caan, it was actually revealed why a sequel to the beloved Christmas film never came to fruition.
What really stopped Elf 2 from happening
James Caan, who passed away aged 82 in 2022, previously claimed that many of the cast – including Zooey Deschanel and Mary Steenburgen – were open to the idea of returning for a second Elf film.
However, behind-the-scenes tensions reportedly prevented the sequel from moving forward.
The late actor admitted on the radio show The Fan in Cleveland (via The Independent) that he had been excited by the prospect of revisiting the story.
He said: “We were gonna do it, and I thought ‘Oh my God, I finally have a franchise movie. I can make some money, let my kids do what the hell they want to do.’”
Yet in the same interview, Caan also claimed that Ferrell and the film’s director, Jon Favreau, ‘didn’t get along very well.’
The actor explained: “Will wanted to do it, and he didn’t want the director, and [Favreau] had it in his contract. It was one of those things.”
So while fans may still dream of seeing Buddy return to the screen, it seems the story is destined to remain a one-off holiday classic.
Behind the festive cheer, creative differences ultimately meant the sequel never came to life – and now we finally know why.
