It has been revealed that Charlie Hunnam will be playing one of the most gruesomely famous killers in history in the next season of Monster.
The true crime genre is increasingly prevalent, with 57% of Americans enjoying viewing such terrifying true stories as per YouGov.
Director Ryan Murphy has capitalized on the obsession, creating a horror series inspired by true crime.
Murphy’s latest success in the genre has been from the Netflix series Monster, the first season: Dahmer: Monster — The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, played by American Horror Story fan-favorite Evan Peters brought in 22 million views in the first five days.
The show became the platform’s most watched in the first week, and fans were instantly hooked by the hideous crimes of Dahmer, unable to fathom such acts took place.
Actor Peters has admitted what a dark toll the role of the serial killer took on him, telling Vanity Fair: “It’s all been incredibly complicated and I’m still processing all of it, to be quite honest.”
Most recently the Monsters season two was released, The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, which hit 12.3 million views in four days.
But despite it being so popular the series has received mixed responses from fans.
The horrific but heartbreaking series focuses on the Menedez brothers, who were imprisoned for life for murdering their parents.
Their crimes have always been controversial with many believing these siblings should be free.
The show follows the alleged abuse the brothers endured at the hands of their father (and ignored by their mother), and the only way Lyle and Erik would be free was to kill their parents.
But now, director Murphy has announced onstage during a promotional event in Los Angeles for season two that Charlie Hunnam will be his lead in the next season, and fans can’t wait.
One writes: “I love this! He will be amazing in this, he’s an incredible actor.”
Another adds: “This casting is so good.”
“I need this new season to hurry up!” a third responds.
Hunnam, 44 best known for his role in the popular FX outlaw biker drama Sons of Anarchy, has also recently been announced as the lead for Criminal on Amazon, a series based on Ed Brubaker’s novel crime stories.
His role in Monsters is one of the world’s most notorious killers who heavily inspired the fictional murders such as Norman Bates in Psycho, The Silence of the Lambs’s Buffalo Bill, and The Texas Chain Saw Massacre’s Leatherface.
Hunnam has been cast to play Ed Gein, also known widely as the Butcher of Plainfield, a killer whose crimes took place between 1945 and 1957.
Gein’s crimes were incredibly dark, as not only did he take people’s lives but he also robbed corpses from graves.
The killer had a troubled childhood, with an alcoholic father, who died, and a fanatically religious mother, along with his older brother Henry. Their house was run by a strict regiment implemented by his mom.
They lived an isolated life on a farm outside Plainfield, and Gein left only to attend school.
His mother taught her child preachings about the sins of lust and carnal desire.
This isolated life and teachings from his mother became a catalyst for the events that would unfold later in his life.
After his father died, his brother mysteriously died in a fire which it is widely speculated that Gein played a part in.
The killer was devoted to his mother and never left her or dated anyone.
After she died in 1945 it is reported that Gein became deranged and even more isolated from the world, the farm becoming a dump, apart from his mother’s room which he left in perfect condition.
In Plainfield, there were mysterious disappearances that were only linked back to Gein after Bernice Worden went missing.
Her son was a deputy sheriff and became suspicious of Gein.
The real nightmares inside the farm were then found.
The reclusive man had a house of horrors, and Worden’s headless body was found hanging from the ceiling, along with organs in jars, skulls used as soup bowls, and a belt made from human nipples.
After questioning, Gein admitted to his crimes of killing Worden along with Mary Hogan.
He also admitted to digging up graves and using body parts to practice necrophilia, and fashioning masks and suits out of skin to wear.
This is what gave him the nickname of the Butcher of Plainfield.
His heinous crimes mean it is no wonder Gein has been such a prominent motif in horror films.
He entered a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity and was found unfit to stand trial after being diagnosed with schizophrenia. Gein was committed to Central State Hospital in Waupun, Wisconsin.
Fans can’t wait to view these terrifying crimes in the next season of Monsters played by Hunnman, but currently, no release date has been announced.
