Will Smith slapped Chris Rock at the Oscars when the comedian made a joke about his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, and the moment has gone viral.

It all started when Rock made a reference to her shaved hairdo – which is a result of having the hair loss condition alopecia – during his appearance on stage.

The funnyman said: “Jada, can’t wait for G.I. Jane 2.”

At this point, Smith slowly walked up to the stage and slapped Rock in the face.

When he returned to his seat – besides his wife – he yelled: “Keep my wife’s name out of your f***ing mouth.”

In response, Rock said: “Wow dude… It was a G.I. Jane joke.”

After a moment of silence, the American went on to remark: “That was the greatest night in the history of television.”

Following the incident, Rock handed out the Best Documentary prize, which was the whole reason he was on stage and making jokes.

Later on in the evening, Smith reappeared on stage to accept his award for Best Actor and made an emotional apology.

He said: “I want to apologise to the Academy. I want to apologise to my all my fellow nominees.”

After the Oscars finished airing, hundreds took to Twitter and shared their thoughts on the viral moment.

Defending Rock, one viewer penned: “Will Smith should have walked up and told Chris Rock to apologise to Jada. That’s how men should react. The only time you can physically defend your partner is when it’s a physical attack.”

In agreement, a second said: “Absolutely. This kind of violence must never be excused. We have enough problems with psyched-up young males without legitimising it in front of a worldwide audience.”

However, another remarked: “So emotional attack is not a problem…”
