A couple decided to host an Animal Crossing wedding and invited some of their friends as the coronavirus crisis forced them to cancel their big day.
Nintendo’s latest Switch exclusive game Animal Crossing: New Horizons has been a big hit with players, especially as many have had no choice but to stay indoors due to the coronavirus pandemic. Many people have found it to be a place to escape reality and find a little haven and some much-needed relief.
The game has been incredibly helpful in allowing people to also stay in touch with their family and friends who also have the game, with one couple hosting their wedding ceremony in-game as the real-life event had to be cancelled because of the outbreak.
On Reddit, Ashmush explained: “My fiance planned it out with our best friends.
“I’m graduating from med school and not getting a graduation and our wedding was cancelled. I was feeling pretty down about missing out on my milestones.”
According to Business Insider, Ashmush – real name Sharmin Asha – received an in-game invite from her fiancé Nazmul Ahmed to go and visit his town. Curious, Ashmush believed that she was going over to help “gather resources”, in order for Ahmed to maintain the surprise.
So when Sharmin arrived at the island, she was shocked to find there was a trial of arrows leading down to the beach, where a romantic scene awaited her. She was greeted by a number of her friends who had arrived before her and she couldn’t quite believe it.
She commented on Reddit: “This made me so happy.
“I don’t even have the words to describe how much it meant to me.”
To make it as magical and realistic as possible, the group made her walk down an aisle and even managed to craft her a wedding dress for her in-game character to wear.
Sharmin described the special virtual day: “He was hosting all of our friends on his island too and they all kind of like stood on the sides of the aisle.
“He put some roses down on the floor for me to pick up and a dress to put on and everything. It was honestly all very, very sweet.”
It turns out they’re not the only couple to make the most of Animal Crossing during self-isolation, as other couples have also been sharing screenshots and stories over social media.

When visiting a friend’s island, it allows you to catch bugs together, plant flowers, decorate the town, or even sit down and have a chit chat. It may sound like real life but it’s set in a much more idyllic setting.
Sharmin said: “I think we really enjoy having a socializing aspect because we haven’t been able to see our friends and go over and hang out in person.
“Even just having them over and hosting them on my island virtually, it really feels like we’re hanging out. It feels so nice just to have physical contact virtually, in a sense.”
What many players enjoy about Animal Crossing is how it allows players to decide what they would like to do with their time. Whilst rewarding creativity, crafting and drawing, the game also allows players to explore their imaginations.
For example, one Reddit user by the name of Faichu – who is a college senior – decided to replicate her graduation as her graduation ceremony was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic. She was incredibly disappointed that she wouldn’t be able to celebrate the achievement with her fellow students and friends, so found that Animal Crossing was the next best thing.
Faichu explained to Business Insider: “With the pandemic causing the last part of our senior year to be abruptly switched to online, our spirits have been pretty low.
“Animal Crossing has given us that much-needed escape from all that’s going on. [It] was able to give us a positive way to celebrate ourselves.”
