Critics Are Raving Over The Gavin & Stacey Christmas Special

Critics have had nothing but praise for the Gavin & Stacey Christmas Special, with the first reviews having just been released.

Series creators James Corden and Ruth Jones have decided it’s finally time to find out what’s occurring back in Barry Island by delighting fans with a Christmas special.

A selection of TV buffs was chosen to attend a private press screening of the episode – the very lucky critics were over the moon at what they watched.

It may be nearly 10 years since the show last aired, so in case you need a quick debrief, the show’s ending was full of drama and hilarious moments.

Smithy (Corden) decided to stop Nessa (Jones) from marrying Dave Coaches (Steffan Rhodri) as they were just about to declare their everlasting vows. Yet it was never spoken of whether or not they decided to let their obvious chemistry blossom.

Meanwhile, after struggling to conceive Gavin (Matthew Horen) and Stacey (Joanna Page) were delighted to discover that Stacey was expecting a baby.

The storyline for the one-off episode has been kept tightly under wrap, but for now, we at least have the reassurance that the lucky few who have watched the show have had nothing but positive words to say.

Editor-in-Chief of Empire, Terri White, was in pleasant surprise at how “exquisite” the final result had turned out.

Boyd Hilton from Heat Magazine was also in agreement, adding: “The new Gavin & Stacey is a total joy. You’ll laugh. You’ll cry. Delivers on every level.”

Television journalist Nick Cannon wrote: “The Gavin & Stacey Christmas Special is an absolute joy. What a treat to sit through and laugh out loud. I loves them all I do…”

Co-creators Ruth and James released a joint statement about the Xmas special earlier this year:

‘Over the last ten years, we’ve talked a lot about Gavin & Stacey – where they might be today and what their lives might look like. And so in secret, we took the plunge and wrote this one-hour special. We’ve loved revisiting Barry and Essex again and bringing the characters back together has been a joy.’

The Gavin & Stacey Christmas Special will air on BBC One, Christmas Day.
