Ex-Formula 1 driver Daniil Kvyat has said that the ban on Russian athletes in sports competitions is ‘unfair,’ as he urges federations to find another solution during the Ukraine crisis

According to reports, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) called for an ‘extraordinary meeting’ on March 1, where the sports ban on Russian or Belarusian athletes from international events was recommended.

On the same day, the Russian racing driver took to Twitter and insisted that an injunction shouldn’t go ahead, as sports should ‘remain outside politics’.

In a lengthy post, he penned: “I really hope for a peaceful solution to this situation in Ukraine, and that we can all live in peace.

“Hopefully all parties can find a solution by sitting together and through a respectful dialogue.

“It horrifies me to see two brotherhood nations in a conflict.

“I don’t want military actions and wars to influence the future of humanity. I want my daughter and all children to enjoy this beautiful world.

“I also would like to highlight and address all sports federations across the world including IOC that sport should remain outside politics and disallowing Russian athletes and teams from participating in world competitions is an unfair solution and goes against what sport teaches us in its principle – the unity and peace.”

The 27-year-old went on to say that during such difficult times, sports should be the ‘glue’ that holds everyone together.

Kvyat’s post divided his followers, with many taking to the comments to share their thoughts.

Opposing the ex-F1 driver, one commented: “Male Ukrainian athletes can’t compete because they have to stay back and protect their country.”

However, others took to the comments and said Russia’s sportspeople shouldn’t be punished for their ‘government’s actions’.

Defending the Kvyat, another tweeted: “Not Daniil’s fault is it though? He is not responsible for his government’s actions.”
