Death To 2021, which is streaming on Netflix, is being slammed by viewers over its ‘distasteful’ joke about Prince Philip, who passed away earlier this year.

The mockumentary, created by Black Mirror’s Charlie Brooker and Annabel Jones, takes a satirical look at the year through commentary from fictional characters, as well as archived footage.

Although many people have praised the programme for its dark sense of humour, others have taken outrage with a remark it makes about the Duke of Edinburgh.

In a clip from the show, a narrator is heard saying: “After the interview, Prince Philip withdraws from public life permanently, by dying.

“Millions watched the funeral of his Royal Highness Prince Philip, the Duke Of Deadinburgh.”

After watching Death To 2021, many people took to Twitter and shared their thoughts on the comment.

One person tweeted: “The Prince Philip joke was a touch too far and maybe a little distasteful, but the rest of the show was spot on!”

In agreement, another added: “’Prince Phillip withdraws from public life permanently by dying’. #DeathTo2021 was wrong for this one.”

A third commented: “Death to 2021 is terribly brilliant and chaotic, the Prince Philip gag was maybe a step too far though.”

“They are wrong for this one,” a fourth agreed.

Death To 2021 also faced a backlash when it came to critics too.

Awarding the show one-star, a reviewer from The Telegraph argued that it lacked ‘wit,’ penning: “[The] end-of-year review lacks its creator’s acerbic wit and creaks its way through gags any TV owner will have heard before.”
