A diner has sparked a debate after tipping a restaurant worker with a $25 Amazon gift card instead of money.
A woman, known as @kaittwest on TikTok, shared a clip on January 3 in which she said: “Holidays left us broke.”
She then added that her fellow diner asked the restaurant whether they could use the gift card as a substitute for a tip.
In the video, she then showed the diner placing the voucher on top of the receipt.
The TikTok clip has since gone viral, having accumulated over 230,000 views.
Defending the customers, one viewer wrote: “As a waitress, I would love it. Lol, £25 is more than 20% too.”
Another added: “Ay, 20% is $17.39. So a $25 gift card is way better.”
“Lowkey, Amazon has everything,” a third pitched in.
A fourth penned: “That’s thoughtful, he didn’t want to not tip.”
Joining in, a fifth commented: “As long as the gift card was legit, what’s the big deal? Dude could have just left NOTHING.”

Others were keen to find out if the voucher was actually ‘redeemable’.
One TikToker warned: “Better check the balance on it before accepting it. Probably taken from the grocery store gift card display and wasn’t paid and activated.”
“People really going out to eat when they don’t have any money huh,” another remarked.
A third said: “Watch the gift card end up being empty.”
