Elton John Slams ‘Hypocritical’ Catholic Church Over Stance On Same-Sex Unions

Elton John has hit out at the ‘hypocritical’ Catholic Church after Pope Francis confirmed same-sex unions can’t be blessed

The 73-year-old thinks it’s wrong of the church to say gay marriage is sinful after ‘investing millions’ into his biopic, Rocketman.

Taking to Twitter, he wrote: “How can the Vatican refuse to bless gay marriages because they ‘are sin,’ yet happily make a profit from investing millions in Rocketman – a film which celebrates my finding happiness from my marriage to David?? #hypocrisy.”

One fan replied: “You don’t need their blessing. Your union (or any loving union, for that matter) is blessed by God.”

“You are blessed, you don’t need anyone to tell you that,” added another.

While a third questioned: “I’m not sure why one would take the Vatican’s money when they have been such a source of pain for the LGBTQ community. Why on earth would he do that?”

The Pope gave hope to many gay members of the church last year when he said he believed same-sex couples should be allowed civil unions.

Speaking in his documentary, Francesco, he said: “They are children of God and have a right to a family

“Nobody should be thrown out or made miserable over it.

“What we have to create is a civil union law. That way they are legally covered.”

However, the Vatican shared a statement earlier this week ruling same-sex unions cannot be blessed.

The CDF said: “There are absolutely no grounds for considering homosexual unions to be in any way similar or even remotely analogous to God’s plan for marriage and family.”
