Facebook’s new name has been mocked over its translation by Hebrew speakers.

CEO Mark Zuckerberg has announced that the company’s title will change to Meta, which translates to ‘is dead’ in Hebrew.

Users have since taken to Twitter and slammed the 37-year-old’s choice, with some suggesting he chose it ‘on purpose’.

One person tweeted: “Meta, Facebook’s new name means ‘dead’ in Hebrew. People joke about it or think it’s a bad name.

“That’s not it at all. Mark is both Jewish and a kabbalist. He knows exactly what this new virtual/augmented reality will do to those who enter into it.”

Another added: “In Hebrew, Meta is the singular 3rd person feminine for ‘dead’. Also, the word for ‘company’ is feminine. Therefore, saying in Hebrew ‘Facebook is now meta’ is literally saying ‘Facebook is now dead’.

“There’s absolutely no way Zuckerberg didn’t know that!”

“In Hebrew, Meta means ‘dead’. The Jewish community will ridicule this name for years to come,” a third Twitter user commented.

The CEO of Facebook decided to change the name of the tech giant after arguing that the name Facebook doesn’t encompass everything the company does. While Meta will better reflect ‘who they are and what they hope to build’.

Zuckerberg said: “Together, we can finally put people at the centre of our technology. And together, we can unlock a massively bigger creator economy.

“Right now, our brand is so tightly linked to one product, but over time, I hope we are seen as a metaverse company.”

According to The Verge, Zuckerberg already owns the Twitter handle @meta and the website meta.com, both of which redirect users to a Facebook page announcing the name change.

It states: “Connection is evolving and so are we.

“The metaverse is the next evolution of social connection. Our company’s vision is to help bring the metaverse to life, so we are changing our name to reflect our commitment to this future.”
