True crime shows give fans the chance to go through the darkest part of humanity and learn the true evil of some people.

The new documentary follows the mysterious death of Jason Corbett, an Irish businessman killed by his wife and father-in-law in August 2015.

Jason, who was born and raised in Ireland, lived in Limerick with his late wife Margaret Fitzpatrick and their two children, Jack and Sarah.

In 2006, Margaret passed away from an asthma attack, leaving the 30-year-old father to raise their kids on his own.

To cope with the weight of caring for two children, he put out a job listing on an au pair agency website.

That is where he hired 24-year-old Molly Martens, from Knoxville, Tennessee. Martens moved to Ireland and became the children’s nanny, who were three and one years old at the time.

Before long, Jason and Molly began a relationship, falling in love and getting engaged.

The family then decided to relocate to Meadowlands, North Carolina, to get married and build a new life together.

The fatal incident took place on August 2, 2015. Molly’s parents, Tom, a former FBI agent, and Sharon, were staying at their daughter’s and son-in-law’s home.

The two claim they heard a loud altercation, and Tom went upstairs to see what was happening and grabbed an ‘aluminum baseball bat.’

According to police interviews obtained by CBS, Tom alleges that Jason saw him coming and grabbed his wife’s throat and said he was going to ‘kill’ Molly.

Tom told police he hit the father of two with the baseball bat, Molly claimed: “He tried to hit my dad, I think, but he might have missed. And I, um, I hit him on the head.”

Molly admitted to hitting her husband with a paving stone, which had been sitting on her nightstand.

When police questioned why she had a paving stone on her nightstand, she responded: “Um, the kids and I – we were going to paint – paint these bricks and flowers around the mailbox.”

Investigators stated Jason’s extensive injuries, including a fractured skull and injuries to his arm, legs, and torso.

The district attorney on the case said the autopsy report was ‘horrific,’ noting a lot of force must have been used to sustain such injuries.

Police later told Jason’s sister that her brother ‘suffered at least a dozen blows to the head’ as per CBS News.

Both Molly and Tom claim they acted in self-defense despite not having any injuries.

Molly filed for custody of Jason’s children 48 hours after his death and reportedly warned the kids that Jason’s sister was trying to take them away.

The children also claim that Molly made them lie about their father being abusive towards their stepmother.

In January 2016, both Molly and Tom were charged with second-degree murder, they were convicted and sentenced to 20 to 25 years in prison.

However, the defense filed a motion to have the decision thrown out after jury misconduct.

In October 2023, Molly and her dad reached a plea deal with prosecutors where they accepted manslaughter charges in return for dropping murder charges.

They were sentenced to spend between 51 and 74 months in prison.

However, Molly and Tom had already served 44 months after the original trial, and had shown good behavior, meant they only had seven more months behind bars.

They were released from prison in June 2024.

A Deadly American Marriage, produced and directed by Jessica Burgess (Rich & Shameless, American Monster) and Jenny Popplewell (What Jennifer Did, American Murder: The Family Next Door), contains exclusive interviews with all major players in the case.

The documentary features interviews with Molly, Thomas, Jack, and Sarah, giving conflicting perspectives on Jason’s death from those closest to the case.
