Disney Plus viewers are reaching for the tissues after discovering an emotional drama that has quickly become one of the platform’s most talked-about movies.

The heartfelt film has struck a chord with audiences, who say it delivers an unforgettable story packed with emotion, hope, and heartbreak.

While many viewers describe it as the perfect choice for a movie night, they also warn that it’s almost impossible to get through without shedding a few tears.

As more people discover the film after its arrival on Disney Plus, social media has been flooded with glowing reviews from fans who say they were deeply moved by its story.

Viewers say the emotional movie is impossible to forget

Audiences have been overwhelmingly positive about the film, with many claiming it exceeded all expectations.

One viewer wrote: “I’ve never given a movie a 10/10 rating before, and I’ve seen quite a few, including all the big-name blockbusters and the niche cinephile classics.

“Very few have made me struggle with the decision to call it a perfect movie; this one is the exception. I knew within 10 minutes.”

Others echoed that enthusiasm, praising everything from the performances to the emotional storytelling.

A second fan wrote: “Absolutely loved the movie. It’s a must-watch. I loved the narration, acting, and storyline.”

Another viewer explained how deeply the film affected them, saying: “This movie felt like one big warm hug. It had these amazing moments that tug right at your heart. I cried my eyes out throughout the movie, and when it ended, I had a big smile on my face.”

For many, that combination of heartbreak and hope is exactly what makes the movie so memorable. Rather than relying on cheap emotional moments, viewers say it gradually builds meaningful connections with its characters, making every triumph and setback feel genuine.

Critics praise the heartfelt story and unforgettable performances

Professional critics have also responded positively, applauding the movie’s emotional depth while acknowledging just how effective it is at bringing audiences to tears.

The Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw perfectly summed up the experience in his review, writing: “A film aimed with lethal efficiency at your tear ducts like Chuck Norris putting his boot into your kidneys.”

The movie currently holds a respectable 7.6/10 rating on IMDb, reflecting its strong reception among audiences worldwide.

Much of that praise centers on the performances, as well as the film’s ability to balance emotional storytelling with uplifting moments.

Rather than becoming overwhelmingly sad, the story explores themes of love, resilience, family, and perseverance, giving viewers plenty of reasons to smile even through the tears.

Many have also drawn comparisons to Marley & Me, thanks to its exploration of the powerful relationship between humans and their dogs.

However, fans argue that while the two movies share emotional similarities, this story offers its own unique perspective by combining family drama with philosophical reflections on life itself.

The bestselling novel behind the hit

The movie is based on The Art of Racing in the Rain, Garth Stein’s bestselling 2008 novel of the same name.

The book became a publishing phenomenon, spending an astonishing 156 weeks on The New York Times bestseller list before eventually being adapted for the big screen in 2019.

The story follows aspiring Formula One driver Denny Swift, whose skill behind the wheel contrasts sharply with the challenges he faces away from the racetrack.

Standing beside him throughout life’s highs and lows is his loyal dog, Enzo, who serves as both companion and narrator.

Voiced by Academy Award winner Kevin Costner, Enzo provides a thoughtful and surprisingly philosophical perspective on the events unfolding around him.

His narration weaves together lessons from racing with life’s biggest challenges, drawing comparisons between navigating a race circuit and finding your way through grief, love, family, and loss.

The film explores themes including loyalty, friendship, determination, and the extraordinary bond between people and their pets, making it especially appealing for animal lovers.

Directed by Simon Curtis, the adaptation stars This Is Us actor Milo Ventimiglia alongside Amanda Seyfried, with both receiving praise for bringing emotional authenticity to the story.

Why The Art of Racing in the Rain leaves everyone in tears

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Ventimiglia admitted that taking on the role initially felt intimidating, but said those challenges helped him connect more deeply with the character.

“I’m not one to be afraid of a role, and actually, when roles are a bit frightening, that’s where you can find the most truth in the character and the story because we’re pushing ourselves. We’re pushing our boundaries.”

He continued: “It was a very human story, kind of like This Is Us, where you have real-life stakes that were happening to this guy, his career as a race-car driver, his life with his family.

“It’s so deeply human, and the angle where you have a dog who happens to be an elevated soul and is watching his owner go through the trials of life, it felt like a unique story. It had magic without it feeling like it was trying to push the magic.”

The actor later revealed that audiences were not alone in their emotional reactions.

Ventimiglia admitted that after watching The Art of Racing in the Rain himself, he was left in floods of tears.

Judging by the thousands of reactions now appearing across social media, many viewers have experienced exactly the same response, with countless fans describing it as one of the most moving films they’ve ever watched, and some even calling it the best movie ever made.
