A found footage horror film on Netflix is being accused of ‘cursing’ viewers.

Netflix has become the home of streaming some of the scariest recent films, with a whole category dedicated to horror, fans who are spoilt for choice.

But this film added to Netflix might be one of the most terrifying yet, with some people saying it ‘cursed’ them.

It has been called one of the scariest films ever made, and fans can not get over it, with one person saying: “It is the best horror film I’ve watched. It gave me nightmares.”

Another adds: ‘”This is one of the creepiest horror films I have seen.”

“So frightening to me and normally stuff rarely bothers me. I swear Asian horrors are the only things that have really scared me,” a third user comments.

A TikTok user even made a video challenging users to see if they could make it through the entire film because of how ‘messed up’ some scenes are.

The movie description reads: “Six years ago, Li Ronan is cursed after breaking a religious taboo: now, she must protect her daughter from the consequences of her actions.”

The film is in a ‘found-footage’ style similar to The Blair Witch Project which is renowned for being one of the most effective and unsettling horror movies ever made.

This style of filming plays with the viewer’s mind as to what is real and what isn’t.

The horror (which boasts a 75% rating on Rotten Tomatoes) even claims it’s based on a true story at the start.

Director Kevin Ko said that the film was inspired by an incident in Kaohsiung in 2005, where a Taiwanese family named Wu claimed demons possessed them, and killed their oldest daughter.

The curse and religion in the movie revolve around the worship of Dàhēi Fúmǔ, which is not real but seems inspired by the Tantric Buddhist figure Dàhēitiā.

Daheitian was sent to share blessings among poor people, linking with the film’s curse backstory: that misfortune and blessing are intertwined.

In a YouTube interview, the director said: “It is a film you know you should not continue watching, it is poison, you should get away from it.”

One part of the film is extremely traumatizing to some fans, that is the inclusion of Trypophobia – an aversion to the sight of repetitive patterns or clusters of small holes or bumps.

These scenes have caused viewers to have to ‘turn it off’ and left them feeling ‘nausea.’

One fan said: “I thought I was going to get holes in my skin watching this.”

Incantation which means the use of spells or verbal charms spoken or sung as a part of a ritual of magic, plays a huge role in the film.

The theme throughout is symbols and the lead character even addresses the audience directly to help with chanting to try and break the curse.

Viewers were terrified that they were actually getting cursed themselves while watching because of how intense and disorienting it was.

One TikTok user even wrote: “The fact I was scared when they were doing a ritual since I thought I might get possessed.”

Another user even asked: “Someone be completely honest with me. Does it curse you, I really want to watch but so many people are saying it curses you?”

This person isn’t the only one, several people claimed they believed Incantation ‘possessed’ them.
