Horror Series With The ‘Most Disturbing Scene Ever’ Leaves Viewers ‘Traumatized’
A horror series with the ‘most disturbing scene ever’ has left viewers ‘traumatized.’
The horror genre brings in audiences seeking thrill, excitement, and fear factor, but one TV show has left fans extremely uncomfortable.
Discussing the anthology series on social media, one viewer shares: “Honestly the whole show is definitely a disturbing fever dream, I was sitting there thinking what the hell am I watching.”
Another writes: “This show is about as disturbing as you’ll find from a big streaming service original. The entire season is pretty much just emotional and physical torture.”
Somebody else insists: “It’s overlooked because it’s a horror series, even though it’s one of the best shows out right now.”
The Amazon original series explores the dark past of racism in American history in its first season.
Its cast includes Deborah Ayorinde, Ashley Thomas, Alison Pill, Shahadi Wright Joseph, and Melody Hurd.
The synopsis of the first season reads: “Centers around a Black family who move from North Carolina to an all-white Los Angeles neighborhood during the period known as The Great Migration.
“The family’s idyllic home becomes ground zero where malevolent forces, next door and otherworldly, threaten to taunt, ravage and destroy them.”
It includes incredibly violent and traumatic scenes, which creator and executive producer Little Marvin acknowledges but believes is crucial.
In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Marvin said: “I as an artist have to sit with myself and grapple with the authenticity of the show.
“If I can sleep at night knowing this entire enterprise has an authenticity and integrity to it, then I’m good.”
One scene, in particular, has left fans traumatized.
As one viewer put it: “That scene was so disturbing and absolutely terrible to watch.”
The scene, which fans consider one of the most disturbing in television history, is known as ‘Cat in the Bag.’ It led many viewers to ‘switch it off’ and ‘walk away.’
During a panel for TheWrap’s screening of the show, actress Ayorinde said: “I don’t think there was any amount of preparing myself that I could have done to play this scene, to be honest with you.”
The second season of the anthology series dropped last year to overwhelming praise, scoring an unbelievable 100% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Chris Joyce for Movies and Munchies said: “The theme of generational trauma is executed well, using layered character elements along with visceral and disturbing imagery to produce a pointed social commentary that unfortunately is still more than relevant today.”
Brandon Avery wrote for Just My Opinion: “A magnificent yet horrid depiction of how trauma is passed down through generations.”
“A deeply unsettling, terrifyingly, season that fully embraces the things horror fans love,” Tessa Smith reviewed for Mama’s Geeky.
The second installment of the anthology synopsis reads: “It’s 1991, and LAPD Homicide Detective DAWN REEVE is assigned to a new case: the gruesome murder of a foster home mother that has left even the most hardened detectives shaken.
“Navigating a tumultuous time in Los Angeles, with a city on the razor’s edge of chaos, Dawn is determined to stop the killer. But as she draws closer to the truth, something ominous and malevolent grips her and her family…”
Season one, titled Them: Covenant, focuses on the terror of racism while using otherworldly threats as a depiction of those fears. Season two, Them: The Scare, explores generational trauma racism.
At the time of writing, a third season of Them has yet to be confirmed.
