Marvel Fans Furious Over ‘Whitewashing’ Of New Black Panther
Marvel fans can’t believe their eyes after a new storyline has revealed a new version of Black Panther, who appears to be white.
The iconic character has been much loved for the representation it provided, but a controversial new storyline seems to have changed this.
It looks at Black Panther’s legacy and reveals his heir, who appears to be white.
It comes after Marvel faced criticism for ‘whitewashing’ Doctor Doom.
This has caused outrage with fans, who adored the representation they had with the previous character.
The character was unveiled in an issue of ‘Marvel Knights: The World To Come.’
In it, a new character called Ketema was introduced, with the name meaning ‘fortified encampment.’
According to Bleeding Cool, the Black Panther character, T’Challa, refers to Ketema as his son.
In the films, Black Panther was played by the late Chadwick Boseman.
T’Challa is the prince of Wakanda, and he reveals Ketema is his child with an early love interest called Monica Lynne.
It all goes badly wrong though, with Ketema resenting his father and trying to challenge him to the throne.
He defeats T’Challa in battle and removes his mask.
It is then shown that Ketema appears to be white, with bright blonde hair, blue eyes, and what appear to be Caucasian features.
Marvel fans are furious at the reveal.
“We ain’t watching no white man play Black Panther,” raged one, as another added: “Life is a horror movie in 2025.”
“Whitewashing Black Panther is insane,” fumed one critic, with another ranting: “Black Panther is WHITE! Marvel actually did the unthinkable and it’s INSANE!”
Others are noticing that the character looks like a particular actor, who could play the role onscreen.
“I guess he looks a little like Ryan Gosling,” speculated one viewer.
“What if Ryan Gosling is coming into Marvel to play the Black Panther after all?” suggested another.
One fan questioned who wrote the new storyline, suggesting: “Lol stop letting these non-Black people touch Black Panther. They do silly stuff like this.”
Somebody replied correcting them: “The writer is Black.”
Christopher Priest is the writer who has co-created ‘Marvel Knights: The World To Come’ along with Joe Quesada, Richard Isanove, and Richard Starkings.
Priest is regarded as the first Black writer-editor to work in mainstream comics and has previously received high praise for his work.
Fans are questioning whether Monica is actually the mother of Ketema if he is white.
They have been trawling through previous comics to try and find out who else could be the mother.
Marvel is known for many twists and turns, so fans will have to wait and see how this one unfolds.
