An ‘intense’ new Netflix show has racked up 5.3 million views in just days.

The streaming platform has once again released a hit original series with this new high-impact thriller.

It’s done significant numbers already, climbing the charts and reaching the Top 10 most-watched list within a few days.

Fans are sharing their thoughts on the series on social media, with one person raving: “I need a second season now! I was on the edge of my seat.”

Another comments: “This was the best I’ve watched on Netflix this year. Already looking forward to the next season.”

“This show has me on the edge of my seat, it’s so good,” a third responds.

Somebody else adds: “This show was so intense! Such a gripping storyline and a chilling survival story.”

“Everyone needs to go and watch this show, it was one of the best I’ve seen,” a fifth declares.

Critics also agree the new crime drama is worth the binge-watch, as Rory Mellon wrote for Tom’s Guide: “The show is fundamentally an exploration of how far one man will go to survive in an unfamiliar, and dangerous, environment.

“And right from the start, you’ll find yourself seriously invested in Juan’s plight. Plus, you’ll be under no illusions about just how much danger Juan is facing.”

The Review Geek‘s Greg Wheeler said: “The latest gritty Mexican drama, taking an eclectic group of characters and throwing them into this hellscape. The result? A nail-biting series that’s been quite the ride over the 6 episodes!”

The show’s official synopsis reads: “Caught in a prison riot, a human rights lawyer poses as an inmate to survive. As he blends in, chaos and personal loss unveil the darkness within him.”

The Mexican Netflix original is based on a 2003 novel by Francisco Pérez Gandul, which was previously made into a film of the same name in 2011.

Directed by Gerardo Naranjo and Jaime Reynosa, the drama series stars Diego Calva Hernández, Noé Hernández, and Gerardo Taracena.

Prison Cell 211 is also based on true events, as a prison riot that inspired the narrative occurred on Jan 1, 2023, at the Chihuahua State Prison in the city of Ciudad Juarez, reports Blavity.

At the time, gunmen who were suspected to be part of a drug cartel opened fire on the prison.

The BBC reported that armored vehicles arrived and began firing at guards – ten were killed, along with four prisoners.

Fighting broke out inside the prison and authorities said inmates took advantage of the situation by escaping.

Prison Cell 211 has not yet been renewed for a second season but judging by its chart-topping views, fans may get just that.
