Netflix has recently added a must-watch ‘disturbing’ horror to its streaming platform.

The highly acclaimed film first released in 2016, has captured the attention of audiences worldwide.

One fan pens: “Absolutely nerve-wracking and disturbing! The tension never lets up. I was literally on the edge of my seat the entire movie!”

“This movie redefines the home-invasion genre. The use of sound (and silence) as a storytelling tool is so clever, unique, and scary!” a second agrees.

A third adds: “That twist in the middle?! I did NOT see that coming. Just when you think you know where the story is going, it takes a darker turn.”

“I love how the characters are morally complex. You’re not entirely rooting for anyone, which makes the stakes feel even higher,” offers another fan.

Critics have offered glowing reviews of the film, comparing its suspenseful storytelling to that of masterful works by directors like John Carpenter.

The Detroit News called it: “a breathless, visceral, nerve-racking thrill ride that doesn’t stop coming at you until its final gasps.”

Similarly, the New Yorker praised Álvarez’s direction, stating that: “the suspense is built as carefully as it is in a good John Carpenter movie; Álvarez uses the camera like a stealth weapon, exploring dark corners and hidden areas of the house with devilish glee.”

The Philadelphia Inquirer hailed it as: “one of the most suspenseful, terrifying, and devilishly original horror pics in recent memory.”

Meanwhile, The Verge commended its immersive quality, describing it as: “a thrilling experience that effectively puts the audience in the protagonists’ place: uncertain, cringing, afraid to even breathe because of the potential consequences.”

The film’s success is evident in its critical acclaim and box office performance.

Earning an impressive 88% score on Rotten Tomatoes, the movie went on to inspire a sequel released in 2021.

The sequel saw Stephen Lang return to his iconic role, further building on the legacy of the original.

Directed and co-written by Fede Álvarez, known for his work on Evil Dead (2013) and Alien: Romulus, the movie tells the gripping story of Rocky, played by Jane Levy (Evil Dead).

Rocky is a young woman determined to escape her troubled home life in Detroit and start anew in California with her younger sister.

To make this dream a reality, she joins forces with her friends Alex (Dylan Minnette of 13 Reasons Why) and Money (Daniel Zovatto from It Follows) to rob the home of a blind war veteran.

Played chillingly by Stephen Lang (Avatar), the veteran is rumored to have a significant cash settlement following the tragic loss of his child.

The premise is both simple and striking.

As described in the official plot summary: “Figuring he’s an easy target, the trio invades the man’s secluded home in an abandoned neighborhood. Finding themselves trapped inside, the young intruders must fight for their lives after making a shocking discovery about their supposedly helpless victim.”

With its tense, claustrophobic setting and inventive storytelling, Don’t Breathe keeps viewers on edge from start to finish.

The increasingly twisted narrative, cleverly designed scares, and standout performances make it a standout entry in the thriller genre.

Critics and audiences alike were captivated by its relentless tension and brilliant execution.
