Netflix viewers have been left sickened by what has been described as the ‘most disturbing’ true crime documentary the platform has ever seen.

Netflix has built a reputation for pushing the boundaries of true crime storytelling, often blurring the line between gripping and deeply uncomfortable.

From Making a Murderer to Dahmer, the platform has repeatedly drawn criticism and praise in equal measure for confronting viewers with the darkest corners of real-life crime.

This latest release, however, appears to have struck a particular nerve, with many viewers warning that it is among the most harrowing titles the streaming platform has ever produced.

Viewers left ‘sickened’ and ‘heartbroken’

The documentary premiered on Netflix on October 17, 2025, and takes an intimate look into the shooting of Ajike ‘AJ’ Owens, a Black woman, by her white neighbor, Susan Lorincz.

After watching the doc, one viewer said: “This is blood-boiling and heartbreaking, the documentary of the year.”

Another added: “Beyond disturbing. Humans turned life into something it could never possibly have meant to be.”

A third wrote: “It made me absolutely sick to my stomach. I had to stop watching for a while, but it’s compulsory viewing.”

Somebody else commented: “The story of Ajike Owens and Susan Lorincz is deeply disturbing.”

While another person called Lorincz the ‘neighbor from hell.’

Unlike many true crime documentaries, the film relies almost entirely on raw police body-cam footage, allowing viewers to witness events unfold in real time.

The approach has been praised for its lack of narration and minimal editorializing, but others say it makes the viewing experience far more distressing.

The doc charts repeated police visits to the apartment complex, escalating neighbor disputes, and the fatal confrontation that ultimately claimed Owens’ life.

Why no arrest was made immediately

After Owens’ death, Lorincz was not immediately arrested, despite admitting to shooting Owens through the front door of her apartment, claiming that it was an act of ‘self-defence.’

An investigation was then carried out into whether her actions were justified, under Florida’s Stand-Your-Ground law.

Lorincz was formally arrested on June 7, 2023, and was charged with manslaughter with a firearm, culpable negligence, battery, and two counts of assault.

In November 2024, she was sentenced to 25 years in prison, and is serving her sentence in Florida state prison.

At her sentencing, Lorincz reportedly stated (per CNN): “I am so sorry I took AJ’s life. I never intended to kill her.”

Florida’s Stand-Your-Ground law is a self-defense statute that allows a person to use force, including deadly force, without a duty to retreat if they reasonably believe it is necessary to prevent death, great bodily harm, or the commission of a forcible felony.

Enacted in 2005, the law applies anywhere a person has a legal right to be, such as a public street, a workplace, or a vehicle.

Before this law, individuals generally had a duty to retreat if it was safely possible before using deadly force.

A key feature of the law is that it removes the requirement to consider retreat, shifting the focus to whether the person’s belief that force was necessary was reasonable under the circumstances.

If those conditions are met, the use of force can be legally justified even if escape was possible. The law covers both self-defense and defense of others, as well as protection against certain violent crimes.

Stand-Your-Ground also provides immunity from arrest, prosecution, and civil lawsuits for individuals whose use of force is deemed lawful under the statute.

In practice, this means police and prosecutors must assess immunity before proceeding with charges, and judges can hold pretrial hearings to determine whether the law applies.

It’s a controversial law, with supporters arguing it strengthens self-defense rights and critics saying it can encourage unnecessary violence and complicate accountability in shootings.

Killer threatens to sue victim’s family

In November 2025, it emerged that Lorincz was threatening legal action against Owens’ family.

CourtTV reported that Owens’ mother, Pamela Dias, had filed a wrongful death lawsuit against both Lorincz and the owner of the quadplex where Lorincz lived.

The lawsuit alleges that property owner Charles Gabbard should have been aware that Lorincz had ‘a propensity for gross negligence and/or intentional harm.’

In response, Lorincz said in a letter that she intended to ‘countersue for slander, libel and defamation of character for damages that exceed $50,000’ against Owens’ mother, her minor children, and Gabbard.

The letter also claims that Gabbard failed to properly secure the property and allowed the victim and her children to harass her.

For many viewers, The Perfect Neighbor is not just a true crime story, but a deeply unsettling reminder of how quickly ordinary disputes can turn fatal.
