A Netflix drama has been hailed as ‘the most important series in history.’

Many films and TV shows are famed for their significant contributions and influences on popular culture.

With more content being available than ever before, it’s impressive to stand out.

Yet one drama has managed to do so and has been described as the ‘most difficult’ program viewers have ever watched.

Praising the series on X, formerly Twitter, one fan writes: “This show on Netflix is possibly one of the most important series in history.”

In agreement, another adds: “A must-watch. Beautiful and heartbreaking, but also full of hope.”

“Probably the most difficult show I’ve ever watched,” somebody else says.

A fourth person pens: “A hard but important watch.”

Critics are also lauding the drama, which has an impressive Rotten Tomatoes score of 94%.

The Guardian‘s Lucy Mangan wrote: “The detail, the tenderness, the authenticity, the brilliant performances make the whole thing both a compelling drama and a potent testimony to the suffering of too many.”

Echoing this, Angie Han noted in The Hollywood Reporter: “It’s a triumph – a sensitively written, superbly performed drama that finds the humanity even in the coldest of days, and keeps you hooked until the very last minutes.”

The 10-episode limited series, inspired by the memoir of Stephanie Land, follows a young mother named Alex who has escaped an abusive relationship and struggles to provide for her daughter.

Starring Margaret Qualley, Andie MacDowell, and Nick Robinson, Maid received three Primetime Emmy and three Golden Globe nominations, among other accolades.

Qualley, who plays the main part of Alex, told Netflix’s Queue why she felt compelled to take on the role.

She said: “Before I auditioned, I burned through the book. It’s one of those that once you sit down, it’s hard to close. Stephanie’s account is at once incredibly upsetting and inspiring.

“I was like, ‘This would be a huge opportunity for me to really sink my teeth into something and give my heart to something.’ I was so happy to be able to do it.”

Land, who served as an executive producer on Maid, has praised the show’s fictionalization of her story.

In an interview with Netflix, the author said: “I wrote a book so people who struggle to get by could see themselves represented in an authentic way, and they could feel less alone… [the series] continues that legacy in ways that absolutely blow my mind.”
