A Netflix movie about a hot snowman initially debuted with a higher Rotten Tomatoes score than The Godfather on its release.

It’s that time of year again when the streaming platform is full of festive films to enjoy over the holidays.

One particular movie, released in 2024, has gone down a treat with fans, with one viewer declaring: “This is going into my Christmas film rotation.”

Another added: “Why was this actually so funny, I loved it.”

“This movie made me laugh so much. I’m so genuinely glad I watched it,” a third shared.

Somebody else enthused: “Yes, I loved it and actually got emotional over it.”

The rom-com’s early reception was completely unexpected.

While Rotten Tomatoes scores fluctuate as more reviews are added, the movie’s debut at 100% signaled a rare moment of near-universal approval for a Christmas comedy, a genre often dismissed by critics.

Critics have enjoyed the holiday movie, with GQ‘s Jack King writing: “Amid its galaxy-brained silliness is a genuinely beautiful message about the human experience, and how we never forget the people we loved. Christmas is for little else.”

Adrian Horton said in The Guardian: “It is absolutely among the top tier of the holiday feel-good movie list. It has heart, pathos, humor, and just enough of a shirtless Dustin Milligan to melt any cold hearts.”

“It offers a refreshing twist on the holiday romantic comedy genre, blending cheeky humor with emotional depth to create a genuinely heartwarming film,” Archika Khurana of The Times of India penned.

What surprised many reviewers was the film’s ability to balance absurd humor with emotional sincerity.

Beneath the intentionally silly premise is a story about loss, loneliness, and the fear of opening yourself up to love again – themes that resonate with audiences far beyond its festive setting.

When the film debuted, it scored a perfect 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, beating The Godfather’s score of 97%. It’s now dropped down to a respectable 76%.

It also dominated the US and UK Netflix charts soon after its release.

The Netflix original, directed by Jerry Ciccoritti and written by Russell Hainline, stars Schitt’s Creek‘s Dustin Milligan alongside iconic Mean Girls actress Lacey Chabert.

Lacey Chabert dubbed ‘The Queen of Hallmark’

Chabert has become synonymous with cosy holiday movies.

After finding early fame with the hit 2004 film Mean Girls, she built a second career as one of Hallmark Channel’s most reliable leading ladies, starring in dozens of films for the network.

Her consistent presence in festive and feel-good projects has earned her the unofficial title of ‘The Queen of Hallmark’ among fans.

Her move to Netflix feels like a natural evolution rather than a departure, bringing her well-established Christmas charm to a wider streaming audience.

The film also features Lauren Holly, Katy Mixon Greer, Joe Lo Truglio, and Craig Robinson – plus a shoutout from Lindsay Lohan in one scene.

What’s the film about?

It follows a young widow whose magic scarf brings a snowman to life – he helps her to rediscover romance, laughter, and holiday cheer.

Viewers have been particularly captured as it handles difficult topics such as grief and the struggles of losing someone you love.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, screenwriter Hainline revealed how he came up with the idea.

He said: “What if Frosty the Snowman came to life and, instead of a snowman, he was a super hot dude? Everyone I told would almost always reply: Yeah, that should be a movie.”

The formula for a great Christmas movie?

The unexpected success of Hot Frosty highlights how festive films continue to punch above their weight on streaming platforms, particularly when they combine humor with emotional honesty.

While the premise may sound deliberately ridiculous, its reception suggests audiences are increasingly drawn to stories that offer both escapism and genuine feeling during the holiday season.

With a familiar Christmas setting, a self-aware sense of humor and a cast well-versed in the genre, the film has quickly secured its place among Netflix’s most talked-about seasonal releases.

For many viewers, it’s not about comparing it to cinematic classics, but about finding a movie that delivers warmth, laughter and a little heart – qualities that make it easy to return to year after year.
