Only one in 100 Netflix viewers can apparently make it through the platform’s scariest horror movie.

The Spanish supernatural thriller has left a deep impression on many viewers.

One person wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter): “It’s based on a true story, and if that doesn’t freak you out a little, you may need Jesus.”

Another viewer admitted: “I’ve nearly had to turn it off twice… I’m only halfway through.”

A third confessed: “Um, I just watched the Spanish horror movie on Netflix, and I legit almost cried, it’s so scary, holy s***. That was a well-done possession movie. Never sleeping again.”

“Started watching on Netflix (huge REC fan so interested in anything Paco Plaza is involved in) but the demon walking down the hallway scene freaked me out so much I had to turn it off,” somebody else commented.

As well as heaping praise on the horror, viewers are issuing warnings.

One fan raved: “I’ve watched way too many horror movies in my life, and this is definitely up there with the greats.”

Another cautioned: “I am sure this movie is gonna send chills down your spine while watching it.”

Meanwhile, a third commented: “Highly effective scares and seriously chilling moments follow, with minimal special effects and maximum suspense. Nothing especially original, but wow, it’s effective. Highly recommended!”

Released in 2017 and added to Netflix in 2018, the thriller is set in Madrid in 1991. It tells the story of a teenage girl who, after dabbling with a Ouija board during a school séance, finds herself haunted by a sinister presence at home while caring for her younger siblings.

The chilling events that unfold are inspired by real-life paranormal claims, giving the movie an even darker edge.

Based on the tragic story of Estefanía Gutiérrez Lázaro, the film draws from one of Spain’s most unsettling cases of alleged paranormal activity.

Estefanía reportedly participated in a séance at her school to try to contact a friend’s deceased boyfriend.

When a nun interrupted and shattered the Ouija board, a strange smoke was said to have entered Estefanía’s nose.

In the months that followed, she experienced horrifying visions, heard disembodied voices, and eventually suffered a mysterious and fatal respiratory attack. Her family even claimed she spoke in tongues, foamed at the mouth, and bore unexplained scratches.

According to reports, Estefanía’s family witnessed increasingly bizarre phenomena, such as objects moving on their own and religious icons being desecrated.

Official police documents even noted strange occurrences at the family’s home, contributing to the legend known as the ‘Vallecas Case,’ per the Daily Star.

With its blend of psychological terror, real-world inspiration, and minimal yet powerful effects, Veronica remains one of Netflix’s most talked-about horror films – and one of its most terrifying.
