Pixar Removes ‘Inappropriate’ Barbie Joke From Toy Story 2 Twenty Years After Its Release
Pixar made a notable change to Toy Story 2 twenty years after its release by removing an ‘inappropriate’ Barbie joke that hasn’t aged well.
Animated films, especially those from Pixar, are often full of jokes children enjoy while containing subtle references that only adults might catch upon rewatching.
Over the years, Toy Story movies, like many others, have become known for hidden adult humor embedded in outtakes.
These snippets, which appear after the credits, show the toys making mistakes on set and often reference pop culture events or real-life occurrences.
However, one particular joke from the blooper reel of Toy Story 2 was removed in 2019 due to changing cultural sensitivities.
This gag has since been scrubbed from newer versions of the film.
People have taken to social media and responded to the removed scene, with one viewer writing: “I always thought it was inappropriate.”
Another adds: “This was honestly a good call.”
A third person weighs in: “Amazing no one complained about it when it was released.”
“It was always a little creepy and definitely out of place,” somebody else says.
Meanwhile, others argue the scene should have been kept.
“I don’t see it as inappropriate, I think it’s more appropriate than ever,” comments one person. “Comedy often highlights genuine issues.”
In agreement, a second says: “Stinky Pete was the creep and villain of this movie, so it was obvious his behavior was horrible even back then.”
The controversial scene, which features Woody (voiced by Tom Hanks), Jessie (Joan Cusack), and Bullseye, originally showed Woody going to check on Stinky Pete, the prospector doll (voiced by Kelsey Grammer), in his box.
When Woody spins the box around, he inadvertently interrupts a conversation between Stinky Pete and two Barbie dolls.
The prospector doll is caught making inappropriate advances on the dolls, asking them in a sleazy tone: “So, you two are absolutely identical?”
He adds: “I’m sure I could get you a part in Toy Story 3.”
The situation takes a creepier turn as Stinky Pete continuously flirts with the dolls, even caressing one of their hands before realizing he has an audience.
Stumbling over his words, he quickly tries to cover up the situation, saying: “Oh, I’m sorry, are we back?! Oh! Alright girls, lovely talking with you. Yes, anytime you’d like some tips on acting, I’d be glad to chat with you,” before awkwardly ushering them out of the box.
This joke, initially a comedic nod to Hollywood’s sleazy producers, is deemed inappropriate in light of the #MeToo movement, which brought attention to issues of s**ual harassment and abuse.
The movement, along with high-profile allegations against film producer Harvey Weinstein, made the gag seem tone-deaf and out of place in a family film.
As a result, Pixar decided to remove it from the Blu-ray version of Toy Story 2, and Disney+ followed suit, ensuring that the blooper no longer appears in any updated releases.
While some fans may still have access to early DVD copies or clips of the original scene, the joke has been largely erased from the Toy Story 2 legacy.
