First Dates star Merlin Griffiths has shared some ‘devastating’ news ahead of Christmas.
The barman has revealed he may have to close his Leicestershire pub, Dog and Gun, over the festive period, just months after announcing he has bowel cancer.
Taking to Twitter, he said: “All our bookings have now been cancelled. Might just close the pub for Christmas. This is appalling.”
After reading the post, his co-star and friend Fred Sirieix retweeted the message in a show of support.
Fans were quick to react to the news, with one saying: “It’s awful and I truly am sorry for all in the industry. My plans have changed. Our work Xmas should be this Saturday but we chose to leave it till January where we will be out in force.
“A few of us have younger children and we don’t want to spoil Xmas for a night out and get covid.”
“It is just appalling!” a second penned. “And let’s not forget hairdressers! We have business dropping off our books like mad now and we have never had any VAT relief at all!”
A third added: “Really sorry to hear this but I’m amazed. People I’m talking to are taking this with a pinch of salt. What was the point of three jabs for this to happen?
“I’m at my Xmas party tomorrow and only a lockdown will stop me. We’ve got to carry on with life now.”
A fourth person also wrote: “It’s awful. I was really looking forward to our work Christmas lunch but almost half of us went down with Covid the week before and we are isolating.
“They need to come up with a financial package to help businesses like yours immediately.”
The sad news comes amid a rise in the Omicron variant of Covid, which is encouraging Brits to stay at home so they don’t have to isolate themselves over the Christmas holidays.
