An urgent warning has been issued after a man took to social media and questioned why his Christmas turkey had turned gray.

A Christmas turkey is often the crown jewel of the holiday feast, proudly occupying the center of the table.

But what happens when things go horribly wrong?

Imagine your turkey emerging from preparation with an unsettling gray hue – not exactly the picture-perfect centerpiece you envisioned.

The Christmas turkey drama was brought to attention in a message on Reddit.

A user wrote: “Someone brined a turkey in a metal pan, and this was the result… and I am oddly terrified.”

The original post read: “Can anybody tell me what happened? I brined my turkey for about 24 hours in this pan, and when I pulled it out of the brine, it looked like this.”

Brining is a cooking technique involving treating meat, fish, or vegetables with a salt solution or brine to enhance flavors, moisture, and texture.

Unfortunately for this man, it didn’t quite work out.

Yet thankfully, many people took to the comments and shed light on what had happened.

Salt interacts with particles in metal, resulting in metallic ions transferring through the brine.

Food safety experts warn against using bronze, brass, iron, copper, or aluminum pots for brining. Instead, they recommend plastic.

One commenter explained: “The salt in the brine reacted with the metal of the pan, and essentially electroplated the turkey with bits of the pan.”

Another added: “My father was a butcher, and brining was always done in stone or, in his case, concrete vats for large volumes. Stone pots are also used for making sauerkraut.”

A third person joked: “Well, that’s one way to get iron in your diet.”

After seeing the viral post, a doctor took to social media and warned against eating gray turkey.

They advised: “Please don’t eat this turkey.”
