People Vow Never To Eat Soft Serve Ice Cream Again After Seeing What’s Inside Machines

If you’re a big fan of soft serve ice cream, you might want to look away now, because this could put you off forever.

It might be delicious, but some people have vowed never to eat a soft serve ice cream ever again, after the discovering the grim reality of what lurks inside the machines.

For those who don’t know, soft serve ice cream is made up of milk, cream and sugar, just like any other kind of ice cream, but the difference is, it is frozen inside a special machine and is continuously churned to keep it soft and fluffy.

This makes it easy to pour into cones or tubs and makes it delicious to eat, particularly with chocolate sprinkles or a cheeky little bit of sherbet, if you’re partial to that.

“The churning and freezing process happens inside a specialized machine that holds a reservoir of this ready-to-freeze base just above freezing,” America’s Test Kitchen explained.

“As needed, the cold liquid base is automatically mixed with flavor and pumped through a slender cylinder that combines it with air while churning and freezing the mix to about 25 degrees.”

With most ice cream machines, the product will then be released by the pull of a lever, typically into a cone or a tub, and topped with a myriad of different sweet treats.

So, what’s the problem?

Investigation revealed grim reality of ice cream machines

Well, it all stems from a report by Inside Edition dating back seven years and looking into many different soft serve ice creams being dished up across New York City.

As part of their investigations, the team decided to test the cleanliness of 40 different ice cream and the results were grim, to say the least.

They found that eight different ice creams contained high levels of a bacteria called coliform, which isn’t in itself that dangerous, but it does paint a very worrying picture about the hygiene and sanitation conditions behind the scenes.

It came after a McDonald’s worker in Louisiana shared horrifying photos of a filthy drip tray in a soft serve machine, and honestly it’s no wonder McFlurries are off the menu every other week because of ‘broken’ machines.

“This came out of McDonald’s ice cream machine in case y’all were wondering. Nice and dirty,” the worker said, alongside the utterly vile images.

At the time this came out, McDonald’s issued a statement, in which it claimed to be ‘committed to running great restaurants that provide our customers with high quality food, service and a clean environment.’

They added: “This is a part of our soft serve equipment that does not come into contact with any food and is required to undergo regular and timely cleaning.”

Unsurprisingly, a lot of people were left with a grim taste in their mouths after watching the investigation, with many vowing to never eat a soft serve ice cream ever again.

“I’ve been watching Inside Edition for a while and now I’m too scared to do anything,” one person confessed, while another said: “This is why I like scooped ice cream.”

No ice cream is safe after woman’s devastation

Unfortunately, nothing is too safe, though. One woman has recently received a multimillion dollar payout after eating an ice cream — in this instance scooped out of a tub — left her permanently infertile.

Brandy Buckley was handed a $14 million payout over the devastating incident, which saw her given ice cream laden with metal screws from a drive-thru ice cream parlour.

Back in 2018, Buckley and her son went to Bruster’s Ice Cream Parlour in Palm Bay, Florida, but she had no idea of the cataclysmic damage a simple ice cream would have on her life.

After ordering a butter pecan ice cream cone, she drove away and quickly noticed something getting stuck in her throat. At first she thought it was a pecan, until she looked down into her ice cream cone and saw a rusty nail poking out of the snack.

“When I did swallow, I did feel something in my throat that kinda got stuck, but I never once thought it was a nail,” she said. “I thought it was a pecan.”
