According to one TikToker, there’s a specific reason some establishments are so eager to place that basket on the table.

And surprisingly, it’s not simply about filling space before the food arrives.

Many people assume complimentary bread is offered out of hospitality, tradition, or cultural custom.

However, the real explanation may be more calculated than many diners realize.

Diners have their own ideas

Before getting into the TikToker’s explanation, it’s worth looking at some of the theories people have shared online about why restaurants hand out free bread.

The topic has sparked plenty of discussion among diners who enjoy unpacking the psychology behind restaurant practices.

One person suggested: “It’s because bread defrosts quicker than the meal.”

The idea here is that restaurants want to provide something straight away while customers wait for their food to be prepared.

Bread is simple, quick to serve, and satisfying enough to keep guests content while the kitchen finishes cooking.

Another person commented: “Most restaurants in the UK don’t do this now, in my experience. Bread is now one of the starters listed. Even in places where it appears to be complimentary, you are generally charged for it.”

This reflects how, in some places, bread has shifted from being a free extra to a menu item in its own right, often carrying a charge rather than being offered as a courtesy.

But according to one viral video, those explanations miss the mark.

The TikToker claims the real reason involves a combination of psychology, biology, and clever business strategy.

The viral explanation

TikToker Manvir Dosanjh kicked off his viral clip by asking: “Why do they give us free bread at restaurants? Look at this bread, it’s delicious with butter.”

He went on to claim that eating bread causes your blood sugar levels to rise before later dropping, creating a cycle that leaves you wanting more food.

In his view, the enjoyment of eating bread triggers a physical response that increases appetite and can leave diners craving additional menu items later on, particularly desserts.

The TikToker continues: “You want to eat more, you have more cravings at the end to buy desserts. So what do we do instead?”

Dosanjh explained that he brings fiber powder with him when dining out.

According to him, the supplement helps slow digestion and promotes a feeling of fullness, which may help reduce hunger and counteract the effects he associates with eating bread.

“I did it, my fiancée did it,” he says. “What happens is my blood sugars are now under control. No more cravings, no more bloating. Now, in the end, you don’t have to buy desserts. You’re going to feel better, take care of your health, and save money while you’re at it.”

Not everyone agrees

While the TikToker’s theory attracted attention online, others have offered alternative explanations for the long-standing restaurant tradition.

Some believe free bread simply helps create a welcoming atmosphere and improves the overall dining experience.

Others argue that it serves a practical purpose by giving customers something to enjoy while waiting for their meals, helping to make the wait feel shorter and more pleasant.

As with many restaurant practices, there may not be a single explanation that applies to every establishment.

The reason restaurants may really do it

The Guardian explored the topic in more depth and spoke with Ken Grant, a culinary professional with more than 40 years of industry experience.

Grant suggested that the reasoning often depends on the restaurant itself.

He explained: “I would say that, in some cases, an establishment has a good baker and a great recipe and just want to showcase.

In other cases, it might be to reduce consumption in an ‘all you can eat’ situation.

In other cases, it is simply a delightful pairing to get the taste buds flowing and might induce further requests for other options or courses.

But I will say: if the bread is not good at the start of any meal, it can easily spoil the entire meal.”

According to Grant, complimentary bread can serve several purposes. For some restaurants, it’s an opportunity to highlight the quality of their baking. For others, it may help manage how much diners consume elsewhere on the menu. And in some cases, it simply acts as an appetizing introduction that encourages guests to order more throughout the meal.

Whatever the reason, one thing is clear: that basket of bread is doing far more than just filling time before the main course arrives.
