French bulldogs and pugs may be ‘banned in the UK’ thanks to a pet charity.

Blue Cross is vowing to crack down on the ‘vicious cycle’ of breeders by considering the option.

Head of Public Affairs at Blue Cross, Becky Thwaites, reportedly explained to The Sun that flat-faced dogs are the result of ‘poor breeding’ and shouldn’t be encouraged.

She apparently said: “We have already started contacting MPs. Ultimately Blue Cross is determined to see the end of the poor breeding of flat-faced dogs and are considering all options both legislative and non-legislative to achieve this.”

Elsewhere in the interview, Thwaites reportedly claimed that 1 in 5 dogs in the UK is now a flat-faced breed.

In the past two years alone, the charity claims to have treated more than 5,000 brachycephalic pets, which is a result of the animals’ popularity.

As well as issues with breathing, French bulldogs are reportedly more likely to be diagnosed with certain conditions, such as pulmonic stenosis. This is when the dog has a 3/6 heart murmur, which is, unfortunately, a genetic trait of the breed.

Birmingham Live reports that Blue Cross is convinced people are considering Frenchies and pugs over other breeds due to the increase in ‘cute’ advertisements on social media.

The RSPCA has reportedly weighed in on the matter and has argued that dogs ‘should not be judged on how they look’.

Currently, there are four breeds of dogs that are banned in the UK, these include pit bull terrier, Japanese tosa, dogo Argentino, and fila Brasileiro.

Reportedly, the government also says that a ‘banned type’ of dog can depend on ‘what it looks like, rather than its name or breed’.
