Joy Reid has reportedly shared her thoughts on the Gabby Petito case, arguing that it’s an example of ‘missing white woman syndrome’.

On her programme The ReidOut, the MSNBC host questioned why the story had ‘captivated’ people around the world.

She said: “It goes without saying that no family should ever have to endure that kind of pain.

“But the way this story has captivated the nation has many wondering – why not the same media attention when people of colour go missing?”

She continued: “Well, the answer actually has a name… Missing white woman syndrome.”

The newscaster then explained that the term came from the late journalist Gwen Ifill, who reportedly believed that the public and media have a ‘fascination with missing white women’.

Supporting the case, Reid referenced other white women who went missing and were later found dead, such as Natalie Holloway and Laci Peterson.

The host was then joined by panellists Derrica Wilson, who is a member of the Black and Missing Foundation, and Lynette Grey Bull, from the Not Our Native Daughters Foundation.

They then talked about the unsolved case of Daniel Robinson, a 24-year-old black man who reportedly disappeared on June 23 when driving home from work.

Reid admitted that she’d ‘never heard’ of the case and pointed out that this proved there was an ‘issue’.

Pitching in, Bull added: “One of the main factors and one of the key factors that a lot of people don’t want to talk about is that its racism.

“It’s systematic racism.”

The case of Native American Mary Johnson then came up, who went missing in November from a Washington state reservation.

Reid admitted: “I’d never heard of this case, either.”
