Love Island viewers have been left ‘gobsmacked’ after learning about Gemma Owen’s age.

The daughter of footballer Michael Owen, from Chester, appeared in the episode of June 6 and revealed that she’s just 19 years old.

Tweeting about it, one wrote: “Gemma Owen is 19!!! If they’re putting effort into caring for the contestants’ mental health, maybe up the age limit to 21 at the very least.”

Another added: “Gemma Owen is only just 19 and on Love Island with people in their mid-twenties. Grim.”

Jesus Christ, Gemma is only 19 no wonder Michael Owen was worried about her on #LoveIsland,” a third commented.

Pitching in, another added: “I don’t know Gemma Owen being only just 19 and going on Love Island with 23+-year-olds really grosses me out.”

Before appearing on the programme, the teenager opened up to ITV about her villa plans.

She said: “I am open to finding love, I’m wanting to have a really fun summer. I was seeing someone and then that didn’t work out so I thought, ‘Why not?’.

“I think I’m good at giving advice, I’m a good person to talk to, I’m very honest. If I want the same guy, I’d do it but in a nice respectful way.”

Owen went on to add that although she’s ‘competitive,’ she wouldn’t get in the way of other contestants who have a ‘genuine connection’.

She added: “But at the same time, I’m not going to mess up something for someone who is in a proper relationship or get in the way of a couple if they have a genuine connection.

“I wouldn’t do anything to another girl that I wouldn’t be happy with them doing to me.”
