Netflix’s latest real-life crime film, Girl In The Picture, is currently rated at 94% on Rotten Tomatoes, making it one of the streaming services’ most successful documentaries to date.

It is currently ranked higher than viral hits such as Tiger King, which is scored at 84% and Making a Murderer, which has an 80% rating.

The documentary studies the murder of Sandra Marshall, who died in a hit-and-run back in 1990.

It is based on the novels ‘A Beautiful Child’ (2004) and ‘Finding Sharon’ (2018) that were written by investigative journalist Matt Birkbeck.

He has since been credited with raising awareness about the conspiracy, as the woman involved in the accident was initially identified as Tonya Hughes and went through various identities before being confirmed as Sandra Marshall.

Those who have watched the documentary, which is currently the most popular film on Netflix, have been praising Birkbeck’s work.

On Twitter, one penned: “It was Investigative Journalist Matt Birkbeck who refused to let decades-long questions go unanswered. He was the glue that eventually stuck each piece of this mess together to give Sharon her name back and some semblance of closure to those who loved her.”

Another tweeted: “You realize the executive producer is Matt Birkbeck, who wrote the two books this movie is based on, ‘A Beautiful Child’ and ‘Finding Sharon’. Go there. It was Matt’s work that kept the entire frigging story alive until the FBI stepped up.

The documentary, which dropped on July 6, has been applauded for accurately retelling the story, and the director, Skye Borgman, has been praised for her handling of the female victim.
