Heinz has finally settled the debate on where you should store ketchup.

The famous tomato ketchup debate has been circulating for years, stirring up arguments, breaking up relationships, and even resulting in written letters of concern to Heinz itself.

But now, the age-old row has been put to rest.

The food giant has spoken, clarifying where to store your tomato sauce – but not before people took to X, formerly Twitter, and argued it out.

One person wrote: “If it was meant to be in the fridge, they’d put it there at supermarkets.”

Agreeing, another added: “So why is it on the shelves in supermarkets and shops then?”

“Never, ever has it ever gone in my fridge, nor anybody else’s,” a third X user commented.

But others took to the comments and argued tomato sauce should go in the refrigerator, most importantly after being opened, with one person writing: “Anyone who keeps it in the cupboard after opening is weird.”

Likewise, a second said: “Once it’s open it goes to the fridge.”

Celebrities have also weighed in on the contentious issue, with rapper Cardi B tweeting: “People who put their ketchup in the fridge are not to be trusted.”

During a 2018 Tinder interview, Lopez came across one profile that said: “If you store your ketchup in the fridge, we’re not going to work out,” to which she said: “Bye-bye to him.”

Finally shutting down the argument, Heinz took to X and asked customers to vote on whether the condiment should be stored in the fridge or cupboard.

In the end, over 13,000 people participated and the answer was pretty clear.

Over 60% of voters agreed tomato sauce should be stored in the fridge, with Heinz stating: “It has to be… in the fridge!”

According to Today, in 2017, Heinz’s website stated its ketchup product is ‘shelf-stable,’ but with a warning.

The food company wrote at the time: “Its stability after opening can be affected by storage conditions. We recommend that this product, like any processed food, be refrigerated after opening. Refrigeration will maintain the best product quality after opening.”

Heinz’s website now advises: “For best results, refrigerate after opening.”
